I don't know. As a server, if I was closing I wouldn't care if someone came in at 9:25. Usually those people are gonna be in and out pretty quick and if it's only one table then I can certainly attend to closing duties and serve them in the same time frame. The way I see it, I'm only going to be staying an extra 5 minutes or so and I'll get a decent tip hopefully.

i agree with you .. but i think very few today see it this way in the industry ..

There is a big difference between walking in at 5 till and 35 till
And I try not to walk in late anywhere. But if the restaurant is full of people I'm not going to feel bad about walking in 15 minutes before close since I'm pretty sure I won't be holding anyone there much longer anyway

And to add to that...one of the problems I had with people coming in late wasn't that they were keeping me late but that the kitchen staff really took it out on me personally and wanted me to push the people to get the hell out of there.

Did you get the dreaded BATWING???
Posted on 5/30/11 at 1:29 pm to Degas
Not sure what that is.
I just know that the kitchen would look at you like you were crazy if you still had an open ticket a few minutes before closing.
But then again, I didn't work in the most high class of restaurants and these people were probably all convicted felons

this has been true at every restaurant I've worked at. I've literally almost gotten in fights with some of the guys in the back cause I'm not too happy about the late table either, so i didn't need to get bitched at for something that's out of my control.
But it's usually the same bad apples back there who gets ticked everytime. There are in fact some hard working ones who understand that things like this will happen sometimes and just suck it up and do the job.

it is awesome when people start thinking a job is a right ..

Well in their defense...it can be pretty exhausting working in a kitchen.
I'm sure it's an emotional mindfrick when you think you are getting off earlier than usual from a long shift and then find out that you're actually staying another 50 minutes.
A lot of those people are poor and probably have to rely on someone for a ride. So sometimes it's not just one person being held up.

welcome to a lot of retail fields ..

You might want to bump that up to 40 or 50%, captain. There's no way around it. Walking into a restaurant 5 min till close, when it's completely empty and expecting to sit for an hour and eat like you would normally is a dick move. Plain and simple.
I never said I do it. I said its just a poor practice restaurants have that most other sectors of the service industry don't have.

And this is the mentality that doesn't exist with most of your former co-workers.
Clock-watchers belong at a desk job as a secretary. Not in a kitchen or a wait staff.
Case in point:
At smoothie king in the NOLA Airport. It closes at 7pm. I walk up at 6:55, say they've already shut the smoothie stuff down. WTF.
your doors close at 7, you clean up AFTER that.

and that is my main point .. this has created a hostile mentality industry-wide toward customers that walk in in the last hour of business .. this doesn't exist wholesale in most other retail fields like it does in restaurants ...

Almost every retail store I know locks it's doors at said posted time. If there are any lingerers, they are urged to hurry and go.
Simple...be there for store hours. If that inconveniences you, go somewhere with different hours.
And to golfer....everybody is a 'clock watcher'. Nobody likes working when they aren't supposed to be working. Some servers are just finishing up a double. Have a little class.

Right. Because if you're selling a t-shirt the t-shirt already exists.
It's obviously a lot different if you need to cook 4 people dinner. The end product doesn't exist yet and there is time associated with making the food and cleaning up again after.
It should be obvious why the mentality is different. And these people aren't going to make any sort of commission on the sale.
