How did I ever think this was good as a kid?

I have tried twice now in the last couple of weeks to make some S&B chicken in the oven.

Both times it sucked..the coating was tasty..the chicken underneath was like eating tofu. Absolutely no taste whatsoever.

I've tried tyson & perdue (thighs & drumsticks) and cooked one 40 minutes & the other 48 minutes (thinking i over or under cooked it).

I can put a whole chicken in the oven, crank that sucker up to 500 with not much but olive oil and salt on it and it comes out tasting amazing.

Do I just suck at the shake and bake or is there something better?

I just want to cook some chicken parts for my poor kids every once in awhile..surely someone has some tips for me.

Thanks

Shake and Bake isn't the issue. You need to season the chicken before you apply it. Then you will enjoy the coating and the chicken will be seasoned

I never understood the idea behind "Shake and Bake". Its pretty much just seasoning and breadcrumbs isn't it?

What I see passing for a time saver sometimes is really laughable.

As you get older you will be surprised at how many things you liked as a kid now taste like garbage, usually processed food. Your tastes mature and you become more discriminating.

I can think of several things I loved as a kid and can't stand now:

Cool Whip
Velveeta
Kraft M&C
Franco-American stuff in a can
Ched Boy R-D
Jello
Cream anything soup
Store bought salad dressings

Baking a chicken, hen, or capon is one of the best cold, rainy day tasks....careful, watchful cooking and basting..the sound of it tenderly cooking...until the masterpiece is ready to be unvailed...It is my all time favorite dish. to the chicken

Last time I made shake and bake chicken, left it in the dorm oven and came back to find that someone stole all of it.

Use pork instead of chicken, S&B does okay in that setting.

But just okay. You can do better than that.
