I'm Curious: Why would you use Dawn? Isn't Dawn designed to breakdown oil, which will remove the "seasoning" from your pot? I don't believe Dawn will "ruin" a pot as some do, but I do believe it can remove the seasoning in the pores of your pot, causing the need to re-season more often. I've always used salt to clean my cast iron.
Myth.

I had a snafu last year with my 20 qt pot where I made turkey cheese drunk and forgot about it. My cleaning job was horrible and when I noticed it 8 months had passed. COMPLETELY RUINED!!! I used Oven Off to clean it and used a little sand paper. Trust me, it needed it. This all brought me back to bright shiny metal.
Go the Pig, in the meat section they sell boxes of bacon end pieces. Over a five day period, I fried and refried those glorious pig parts in the pot, returning it to dark hue.

Get sunflower seed oil. Coat well. Wipe down. 500 degrees.
Don't use the animal fat.

What's the Myth?
That Dawn removes the "seasoning". If Dawn removes it it wasn't seasoned properly.

OP, I got new seasoned pans as well. I put veggie oil in mine, and baked at 250 for 2 hrs. I was warned that using animal fat to season could make it rancid.
