Scotch drinkers, looking for a recommendation
I know nothing about Scotch, but I'm heading to Scotland next week and I'd like to buy a bottle to bring home as a gift. Are there any brands I should look for that are not available in the US in the $100 range?

I appreciate any suggestions.

Stop by The Whisky Shop. Tell them your budget, what your friend likes, and they get you a great bottle.
They also have small batch 200ml bottles so you can get some different types.

Why focus on "not available in the US" and instead go visit a distillery and buy a bottle there? More meaningful than a a random "rare" bottle, and you can regale your friend with pics & stories about the distillery. Depending on the distillery, you can supplement with other merch (shirts, glassware, etc)

We were lucky enough to have a friend who is a member of The Scotch Malt Whiskey Society in Edinburgh when we visited. Very exclusive Vault-only offerings that you won't find anywhere else in Scotland.

You can pay £150 for a membership just to get in, if you got it like that...

It's a pretty cool experience to say the least.

Or you can visit the distilleries and ask the barman which ones are not available outside of Scotland.

How long are you there for?

re: Scotch drinkers, looking for a recommendation
It's funny... I was in my friend's wedding last weekend. His dad walked into the room with all the groomsmen and busted out this bottle of 1991 Bunnahabhain. He used to be a member of the Society when they lived in Edinburgh (my buddy was born there... his dad is a ChemE from State who worked for BP). The dad bought this bottle the year my friend was born and kept it in a little cedar chest until my friend was married 27 years later. The bottle lived with them in Egypt, Trinidad, Russia, and India.

The only part of that story that’s not totally cool is that your fried was born the year I started LSU. Time flies......

That man deserves a "Dad of the Year" trophy... Definitely a CSB!!! I bet it was a very tasty dram!

Eta:
One think that catches my eye about that bottle is the handwritten "Bunnahabain" notation. That's definitely a bottle not many, if any, have in the states.

Yeah, they had a room full of casks of different single malts. You were permitted to buy up to 5 bottles. They filled the bottle from the cask and sealed it.
