San Antonio Places To Eat and Hotel Recommendation

I will be traveling to San Antonio to see my kid graduate from Air Force Basic Training in a few months and would like some recommendations on what part of town to get a hotel and some places to eat....I'm told the area around Lackland AFB is a little on the sketchy side and was thing about staying closer to the Airport, but appears to be a good distance away.
Thoughts and recommendations would be appreciated.

Bohanan's for steak/seafood - pricey but fantastic

i have worked in or around San Antonio for years and I can tell you that it is not a food destination. If you want a steak you may as well go to the palm. Everything is chain there other than BBQ joints.

i haven't found one that is great. They are all kind of the same. Not bad just not what I was hoping for.

I have stayed at the Hyatt downtown - sort of across from the Alamo and on the river. It was nice when we were there and it is on the river. There are lots of places in the area (Touristy, but good food) to eat. Or go to Market Square. There are 2 pretty good Mexican places there.
Or drive up to Gruen, TX, eat some BBQ brisket and Texas two-step the night away at the Dance Hall.
Others will disagree.
In a bind, There is a pretty good PX grill adjacent to the medical company barracks for Brook Army Medical Center at Ft. Sam. I guess I was there last in 1970, so that recommendation might not be current.
Fondest memory of San Antonio was buying a bottle of Boons Farm, a 4 piece Church's Fried Chicken and 4 or 5 Jalapeños and sitting on the curb behind the barracks to eat chicken and peppers.

La Margaritas in Market Square, great food and drinks

Hotel Emma was just named one of the top 10 hotels in the country. At least go check out the bar there. Its in the old Pearl brewery. There are some good restaurants there also. We did a margarita crawl and had a good time.
There are good tex mex restaurants. They just aren't at the riverwalk or the market. We are partial to Ray's Drive Inn. Check out the discussions that were linked above.

This is a good suggestion also. Its a pricy pizza but very good.
We recently had Blanco Café for cheese enchiladas. Classic tex mex and hot as hell hot sauce.

J Prime is pretty damn good, not to mention a fine place to view local ladies in the bar.

I thought my steak at Bohanan's was good, but my prime rib at Boudro's Bistro was better. Boudro's is right on Riverwalk, but Bohanan's is just like a block or 2 off of it.
