It's actually way more anonymous on here. Your name and picture is on yelp. If this was posted on the OT or some group like Anonymous got ahold of it, his rating would have dropped to a 2-star overnight.

I think this is the lesson to be learned here. The Internet Is ruthless. Cut your losses which truthfully aren't that bad right now as I doubt many people have read those Yelp posts. Go delete them then slowly step away from the keyboard.

Completely agree. Especially in the food industry here in NOLA, you have to have a thick skin and take bad reviews and suggestions as constructive criticism as much as possible.

This should be the textbook example of how not to handle criticism as a business owner, which is why I find this thread/story so entertaining.

This thread is terrific and terrible all at once.

Saw someone reference the guy from NOLA Smokehouse. I don't know him, but I eat there frequently and am never disappointed in the food. If I based my consumer decisions on whether the proprietor was a nice person, or whether the company was a good corporate citizen, I'd go bonkers.

I think most level-headed people don't care much about an owner's personal style, political views, or faults as a human being - so long as they keep it to themselves. This guy decided to put it out there in a public forum that he was essentially better than his customers. Don't think anyone is being unfair in judging him accordingly.

I would as well. But how often do restaurant owners come out and publically shame customers? This is a little different....

Edit: R2R nailed it ^^^^

From what I can see of his posts on here and the links to his yelp tantrums, the guy wouldn't know pithy if it clobbered him upside the head.

For whatever it's worth, I basically enjoyed the place the one time I tried it. I had the chicken livers too.

The guy made poor business decisions every time he posted a retort on Yelp. Fact. It doesn't hurt Yelp. It only hurts him. This is basic stuff in service businesses. Some won't care. Some will be turned off and write off the restaurant.

If there's a way he can delete his responses, I suggest doing so. If not, live with them, learn from them and refrain from responding in the future, particularly if he claims reviews on Yelp aren't worthy. It's not like there are a million of them. He's sitting with a 4 star rating. Why try to blow that with silly childish responses? Crazy and illogical.

There will be more reviews and he can hope they're favorable. If he can read the reviews and learn from them while biting his tongue at the same time, he should do so. Some may have information that he would want to know. Some will not have useful info with anything worthy of change. Use Yelp as a tool rather than a place to blow his stack over 4 or 5 poor reviews. The percentage of his customers who bother to post there is minimal if you look at the number of posts.

Social media exists and it's not going anywhere. Most folks will take to media rather than voicing their criticisms at the restaurant. Just the way it is, right or wrong. Make the best out of it and move on along. If you can't handle criticism on social media, don't read it.

The guy needs to get a grip.

How much in depth review do y'all do before going to a restaurant?

Reading posts on a Facebook page?

I'll read yelp and/or Facebook reviews before going. especially if it's pricey. I'm not spending a bunch of money for shite food when I was warned by the reviews.

Would I normally go to the restaurant's FB page before trying out a new restaurant? Sure! Check out pictures, comments, etc. What's so bizarre about that?

Would I normally check out the owner's FB page? No but since he posts a lot of info to the restaurant's page from his own page, it makes it an easy click. In normal circumstances, I may or may not check out his page. Often times, owners post more pictures that what is on the main page. Since this is the topic du jour, of course I checked out his page in this instance.

Maybe I am in the minority of judging a restaurant with my own tastebuds.

I get most of my information here, but I also follow a lot of restaurants and chefs on Facebook and if I'm not following the restaurant, I'll look it up on Facebook for posts and pics from the restaurant or chef and posts from folks who've eaten there. I'm usually looking for recommended dishes posters have enjoyed, but while doing so, you will see some general reviews and comments. I very rarely look at places like Yelp and Urbanspoon and usually only if I'm out of town looking for restaurants near my location or lists under types of food, maybe.

so you'd buy a car then determine if it was worth your money after you've driven it for a year?

acting like you're a god because you don't use reviews or research before making decisions with money just makes you look like a dumbass

People that I know? Yes.

Random people on the internet. No.

Yes, a $50k car and a $5 sandwich require the same sort of research for me.

Dunno about you guys, but there are a decent number of multinational brands, local companies, and yes, restaurants that I choose not to patronize because of policies, politics, or the conduct of owners. That's what's great about the free market: we all get to choose.
