Does it say they owned the BR franchise?

I know the building in BR and that franchise was owned by that family. I know they owned one in NOLA too. Its a venture capital group though so is probably just franchises.

What happened?

Semolina's was really good. I ate at the one in Covington and the one on Coursey and both were excellent.

Then the wife and I went to the one on Coursey one night, about a month or so before they closed, and it was bad. Place wasn't clean, food was bad.....everything took a nosedive for some reason. Next thing, it was gone.

I thought they were all corporate owned--didn't know they had franchised.

Are there any Semolina's left open? Does anyone know?

Hell it has been many years since the location on Perkins closed its doors. That location is now the center of one of the heaviest trafficed spots in BR.

When the 2 locations originally opened,(1996) the were a franchise owned by twin sisters Gloria and Gladys. One of these sisters were married to Jim Brown, the former insurance commissioner. I know the sisters made their money in the theatre business, so whoever said that earlier in the thread was probably correct. The restaurants were very successful and very well ran at this point. After a few years, they sold back to corporate. The chain was expanding rapidly at this time and new restaurants were being opened all over in the south and east coast. As they expanded, they started cutting major corners, most of the foods/sauces was no longer made in house and also corporate no longer made surprise visits gauging service times and that stuff. Front of house training basically disappeared. As the chain began stuggling badly, most of the new restaurants in FL, AL, and NC began closing down within a year or two of opening. The Louisiana (BR, Alex, Laffy) restaurants also were struggling badly because of the problems mentioned above. Instead of closing them, corporate Semolinas sold them as franchises. The guy that bought the BR franchises remodeled both of them, but the newly floor plan pretty much sucked and they needed more than just a remodel get back to their glory days...The location off College was a shithole. At this point, the food sucked and the service was worse and the restaurants closed in the mid 2000's.

That is really a shame because at one time it was very very good. I absolutely loved eating their food.

I agree. The food was freaking great at the beginning. What happened with Semolina was a classic example of a company losing sight of their originally successful concept by only focusing on the profit margin. As they began rapidly expanding, they hired a guy that used to be a big shot in the Disney corporation to run the company. He tried to reduce cost on everything. Less money was spent on training, and almost all the food went from being prepped in house to being made in bulk and shipped in. EVERYTHING from pre-breaded frozen chicken breast, as well as the sauces were then made offsite, to the bread that we originally would buy fresh every morning from Albertsons were now being bought frozen and delivered once a week. The quality of EVERYTHING plummented, and it was immediately obvious. Business dropped off significantly and nothing was ever done to try to get those customers back.

That area, the intersection of Coursey and Sherwood has many successful restaurants, I'm not saying it's gourmet fare, but they are making money. Londoner, Waka House, Hunan's, Walk-Ons, Rotolo's,Albasha, and many more. But a crappy place will not make it anywhere.

I just went to the Golden Corral this week, since Ryan's is closed. I find it to have a much better selection. The food tastes about the same as Ryan's.

In regards to the coursey/Sherwood intersection lets not forget calendars closed and so did Italian pie. Calendar will reopen as a bar/ grill in a few months; Italian pie location now sells insurance. Also let's not forget that the Applebee's in that area seems to be very successful

So what's your point? Italian Pie is/was awful, Calendar's was in a state of steady decline, Applebee's delivers as promised, not worth a shite, but that's what they promise.
