Bea's Cafe
This is in Ruston south of the university? When I was in school there was another one also, The Blue House maybe or something like that. Some of the best home cooking I have ever tasted. The first time I went we sat there forever waiting for our drinks til we realized you had to get them yourself out of the cooler. You had to serve yourself they only brought you your plate.

Taking my son to tour LaTech this Friday.
Nevermind.
If you can get to Monroe, try Mohawk Tavern on Louisville Ave. If you like dives, go to Coney Island in Old West Monroe.

Yeah, sort of in the middle of a hoodish type neighborhood (or at least, the closest to that you could find in Ruston).
I can't remember if it was Bee's or Bea's.
My online search reveals, it's likely not open anymore. It wasn't serve yourself, it was full service dining. Bea was an old black lady (this was like 1990 or so, I'm guessing she's no longer with us), who would peer out of the kitchen in a starched white maids outfit, and would sling out some outstanding soul food type dishes. Her smothered pork chops were outstanding.

Dinner at Casio's Tavern (Creole/Italian) on Trenton St in West Monroe. Or cross the river and eat at Cotton (Seafood, general badass fare) or Bacco (Italian) in Monroe.
Ate at Cotton's recently and it was not nearly as good as it has been.....
....plus some old weird guy in there ruined the atmosphere for everyone.

No longer in Ruston. Sweet Peas is also gone as was Blue Light for a long time. Blue Light is only one still around right now but their plates are about 12 bucks for a smothered porkchop and a couple small side dishes. Just not the same as it used to be when it was at the old house. Its still good and they are friendly as can be but like last week I went there and my turnip greens were still frozen when they brought them out

The Dawghouse is a good place to do lunch if you're on campus. It's right on Tech's campus. Local joint with a lot of Tech pride. Get a burger on the Jalapeno cheese bun.

The Dawghouse burgers are good.

Yep Blue Light Cafe. It must have been it and Bea's, I remember there were 2 similar spots, usually ate at the one that was the easiest to get in. I was there from 86-90. Many a day had that for lunch and Griff's for dinner and whatever we had left was for beer that night. Man those were the days!

Yea, Griffs still around. I eat it every now and then, its good to me just not good for me

Still my favorite restaurant in the Monroe/W. Monroe area. Have eaten there since I was a kid & love the atmosphere.
