First trip to Sangria. The menu is a peculiar mix of Tex-Mex, Central American, Caribbean, South American and Spanish dishes. I ordered their signature fajita dish, the steak is hardwood grilled and with a marinade similar to the Soy sauce version that Ninfa's uses. The meat is tender and delicious, served over sliced bell peppers and sauteed onions, but the quantity is disappointing. For $16, you only get a sparse number of thin steak strips which is about equal to the "Jackie" plate ($12) at Ninfa's. I chose the black beans and cilantro rice as one side, Sangria patatas as the other. The black beans were fairly bland, the rice was good, but better suited for pinto beans (you're not getting Caribbean black beans and rice). The patatas are hashbrowns, rough cut and standard Louie's Cafe fare.

I also tried some of the Havana Sandwich ($9.50), and was a little discouraged as soon as I noticed panini grill marks in the bread. A traditional Cuban sandwich is always made with a flat sandwich press, and never with a panini grill. The sandwich came with the trademark ham slices, roasted pork (though too finely shredded), swiss cheese, sliced pickles, and mustard. Their own twist involved using very spicy brown mustard, a faux pas that detracted from the flavors that would normally make this a standout sandwich.

Service was mixed, a few waiters seemed to be noticeably more attentive than others (my order was botched in several ways, but the waitress did her best to fix things).

Other dishes there included empanadas, tapas, tamales, tacos, jerk chicken, Honduran pupusas, Latin-themed sandwiches, seafood and South American style steaks. Sangria is more of a Latin fusion restaurant than the contemporary Mexican tag the owners billed it with.

The restaurant interior is something of an upscale sports bar, there are just as many booths as there are tables (white tablecloths). The inside is dark wood and some exposed brick, with vaulted ceilings, six flat planel TV sets on the walls. The bar is a good 25 feet long, with another bar counter opposite with stools that runs about 20 feet, so they seem to be banking on a Superior Grill atmosphere.

My verdict is that this could be a fun place to watch a football game, but not a destination for weekend dining. The prices seem to high for the quantity and quality, the same two-pupusa plate at Sangria ($13) would set you back $6 at an authentic Honduran restaurant across town. An eight-ounce Argentine Steak will run you $24. I'll go back in a month or two after they've had the chance to get situated, but it's not encouraging that they're already charging more than Ninfa's at the gate.

With you being the resident Latin / Mexican food guru, do you think it has the potential to make it in that building? Do you know if they are leasing or bought the place? And, as you said, with pricing like that out of the gate, do you think people will give up ninfas, serranos, etc to eat there? I've never eaten at the place that's taking the old Lone Star location on Acadian, but how will that stack up as well? Side note, will either of those put a hurtin on Mestizos?

It's five guys that collectively own the restaurant, but I don't know if they own the building. I have no idea if it will do well in that location or not, but it seems to target the college crowd in that immediate area.

Ninfas is marketed to a different demographic, I doubt it would cause a dent. And Serranos is a sub-par restaurant that will always do well by virtue of it's location.

Only thing I know about the new place around Acadian is that it's Arab-owned, I haven't been there or met the owner yet.

Mestizos has their niche covered, and has a good bit of patron loyalty, so I doubt it.

If its still Coyote Blues taking over that spot, I've been to the one in Lafayette and the food is very good, reasonably priced (the only things more than $20 on the menu are fajitas for 2), and you are given VERY generous portions.

The only restaurant somewhat like it in BR is Mestizo's but Coyote Blues has more variety to their menu.

So wouldn't it make sense that KB would spank Mestizos? Can't be cheap in that location.

Old Portabello's location on Lee, across from Mike Andersons. I was honestly debating on inviting you, but I wasn't sure how much sangria you would have kicked back

Mestizos has a rep for being a Cajun-Mexican fusion restaurant that specializes in seafood. That's why I said that any new Tex-Mex spot in area probably won't take too many of their faithful customers.

Shows how often I go on that side of town, I had no idea Portobello's had closed.

If they are targeting a college crowd at those prices they will fail miserable unless they start running drink and food specials.

We're probably going to see weekday beer specials.

Just went for lunch. I had the Sangria Special Salad and added chicken. It comes with a cilantro/lime vinagrette. Wife had the pulled pork with mango chutney pressed sandwich. She ordered grilled onions as an extra and went with the patatas.

Salad: Salad was iceberg lettuce, black beans, corn, avocado and grilled chicken. The salad came with the wrong dressing (some kind of ranch). The grilled chicken was nicely seasoned, but mealy. I couldn't eat the chicken. The lettuce was about 50% lettuce ribs--you know, the hard stem. F

Sandwich: Nicely smoked pulled pork. Not enough of the mango chutney. Nicely grilled bread. Kitchen forgot the grilled onions. B

Patatas: Undercooked and ice cold. They were inedible.

They need to taste their food. It needs help.

This place was opened as a Bar First, and restaurant 2nd. By Coolaid being an owner people should realize this. People are not going to go here for the food, but the owners want to get people in there drinking, then order food. The food is just Iceing on the Cake for these owners. The alcohol sales is where the money is at and the food is just extra.

This place is NO DOUBT Drinking/Atmosphere first and food a distant second. I dont expect to get an authentic mexican meal there. If I go there, it will be to drink and eat chips and salsa and hang out with buddies and stare at college chicks, the menu will not be top of mind.

Might have to try it.

Like I said, Louie's Cafe fare.

If that was the case, maybe they should have just opened up a burger joint, or a surf and turf spot. Why head into culinary unchartered waters and possibly pick up mixed or even bad reviews.
