Abita Amber was probably a lot of ours gateway craft beer. Mine was at the original Jaeger's West End in '96 for their $.99 crawfish Friday's.

Not sure if it was my first, but Shiner Bock was consumed a lot.

Brother Thelonious would probably be up there too, but that is just a Belgian really.

My gateway beer was Sam Adams Boston Lager back in the late 80's. These days you wouldn't even consider it a craft beer. But it got me out of the macrobeer mindset and opened my eyes to beers outside of the pale lager realm. Anchor Steam was another one around that same time period.

First one ever was probably a Pilsner at the Cresent City Brewhouse on Decatur in the French Quarter circa 1994. In 1996 or so, there was The Brewhouse in Thibodaux where Fremins is now. Come to find out, that Brewing Equipment is now at Spigots in Houma.

Anyone remember The Mill in Baton Rouge on Essen Lane that actually brewed their own beer? It was pretty short lived in the early 90s or so.

Was that part of a chain? I was in Tallahassee at that time and there was one there too (actually maybe two of them, iirc). I believe they went tits up but they weren't too bad.

Mine was Sam Adams Cream Stout back in about 91 when SA was still semi-craft at least.

My FIL, who lived in Asheville at the time, introduced me to it. Probably a St.Terese's or Kashmir from Highland.

I think it was a shiner bock

Not sure if that’s considered a craft beer though

Believe so. There was also one in Birmingham for several years. It was a very popular brunch place.
