I don't understand why the cleanout hole is above the bottom of the grill, it would be so easy to brush the ashes out if it were level. I went and bought the cheapest small harbor frieght vacuum and just clean mine with it.
My guess is that the lip is there to keep grease from dripping out if you aren't using a drip pan (or if you are and the pan is leaking. This happened to me. Made a mess on the patio)
I've given up on sweeping ash out and use a shop vac too

I keep going back to these. I just love the grill marks from those cast iron grates.

I got a chargriller akorn kamado style grill for like $340. It's a double wall steel kamado and not traditional ceramic, but it's great.
The build quality is definitely not on par with ceramics, but the cooking is almost as good. Since it's double walled steel, it takes more coddling against the outside elements to keep it in good shape

Does that hinge setup hold the top pretty sturdy?

I have the weber performer and love it. The built in side table was the selling point for me.

I have it on my smoker, not a grill but it works pretty good. It doesn't open 90 degrees, so sometimes I will bump my forearm on the edge of the lid. Not a big deal, just get a little grease on them from the smoker. If you were grilling its probably gonna burn the shite outta you, but it will probably hurt bad enough you won't do it but once

If you don’t mind waiting check out the Chud boxes. Should be picking mine up in December.

I have a Weber Master Touch kettle... There are two drawbacks, though, that I want to improve. Mainly, the overall frame isn't very rigid which makes it a royal pain to move around. I have knocked the top off numerous times rolling the thing on the pavers on my patio. Also, there is no place to put the cooking grate when lighting coals so I usually walk into the yard and throw it in the grass.
The hinge kit mentioned by some may do the trick. I thought some new models came with it, but not sure. When rolling mine on an uneven surface, I make it a 2-handed operation to keep the lid on. I bounced a lid on an old basic kettle, and it never fit right again.
I clean my grill grate before I fire the charcoal, then rest it on a wheel so there is minimum contact between grate and patio. No stains yet. Sometimes I put it on the cold grates of my gas grill until needed.

Vision komado from academy has been fantastic for me.

All grills have their pluses and minuses.
I want to make sure I was clear in addressing the OP's original issues.
The Performer is the same grill, but the table with 4 wheels makes it super sturdy and stable. No issues there.
Getting a grate from SnS will allow you to leave your grate on the grill and pour charcoal by lifting up the hinged side of the grate.
Otherwise, the grill is exactly the same. If you bought a Performer, you could still keep the old kettle as an overflow grill if you have a big crowd, especially since one of the big drawbacks of the kettle is that it is not the largest grill in the world. Neither is the PK Grill, for that matter.
