really nice night/day in Covington

Friday night we booked a room at the southern and drive the 20 minutes from Hammond. Dinner at the bar in the hotel. my favorite hotel in the area, always first class
Saturday, packed up and and hit the Covington farmers market. There’s a lady there that sells empanadas we bought all we could carry, so good. Some of the best I’ve had
drove over to the chimes and rented kayaks on the river. We paddled upstream about two hours and then back down. Perfect weather, cold beers, a little sativa...heaven
we went downstream of the chimes on the way back and pulled out at the bluesberry festival at bogue falaya park. Really cool, next year we will bring chairs etc and make a day of that. Great set up, music, food and whatnot
back to the chimes, pulled out and drove home, we stopped for an early dinner at the shack on 190. Holy shite, some of the best most flavorful food I’ve had in a while. We were shoveling it in it was so good. Sadly they are closing next week, so I recommend 100% getting there before they do. Shockingly good
this weather is special y’all go enjoy it

do it while the weather is this nice.
plenty of dinner options walkable from the southern and the kayak setup at the chimes is as hassle free as can be
if you stay 2 nights there is another farmers market in abita on sundays and you can hit up the brewpub, or if you have bikes bring them and take the trace

This is surprising. Did they tell you why? Business seems to be good when they are open. Their schedule has been all over the place over the last year after being reduced during pandemic.

was told the owner wanted out and sold the building. Next Saturday is their last day.

Are there a few years ago and if was remarkably good. Different sort of food but really good

If they moved to a spot closer to town, they’d not regret it imo

I have lived Northsore now for 12 years and somehow have never even heard of this place. Damn. I'll try and hit it up this week if possible.

I like the Shack and saw their building was up for sale a couple weeks ago. I was not surprised because of the location. It was good food when we went.

That location has actually been a neighborhood restaurant since the 70's at least. It was Brown's Restaurant during the 70's and earlier(not sure how long that location has been a restaurant) and later on Schwing's had a long run there. The Shack has been there about 5 years I think. If anything with the hundreds of new homes built around the area in the last 20 years should help to support that location if the food is good.

I did want to get your opinion of the food and the service if you don't mind. Reviews have been mixed after looking them up online. I haven't dined at Gloriette yet= I find the concept a little too "Southern Woman reads Architectural Digest" for my liking, but the food should be the determining factor.

its more about style than it is about taste and thats a disappointment. its good but not oxlot good, and there are much better options
