Question about Masterbuilt Electric Smokers
Posted on 1/20/15 at 2:52 pm

I was given a Masterbuilt 40 inch electric smoker and have a question regarding the wood chips. How long are they supposed to burn? I've done a couple of cooks and found that I have to reload chips every 90 minutes or so. I thought they would last longer than that. Anyone have tips to make them last longer? Any mods I should make to the smoker?

I use mine almost every weekend... St. Louis Pork Ribs at 250 for 2 1/2-3 hours, find a good rub and pull the membrane off the back. I use oak chips, dont soak them.
90 minutes is about right for how long they last. Good luck.
I also cooked some pulled pork for 6 hours on it this weekend that came out great.

that is plenty, the meat picks up the most smoke early in process, I have never had to give it more than 2 doses of wood during a smoke, regardless of how long I smoke something

I have one and love it. I don't worry about the wood chips
it always gives plenty of smoke, don't stress over it. ive done ribs in 4 hours and only loaded it once with pecan. turned out great

quote:Buy an Amazen pelet smoker for it. It burns pellets or sawdust. However much you fill it determines how long it smokes. Full tray will go about 8 hours, half tray 4 hours, etc. It also gives you the perfect blue smoke that you want. I use this if I am smoking for a long period of time as I don't have to do anything but watch meat temps .

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'm on par with the norm. I was more concerned about keeping the smoke going on future overnight cooks (brisket).

Thanks for the rec! I read up on it this morning and like what I saw. The reviews seem very positive except for those who didn't let it burn for 10 minutes first. Is a torch necessary to light it? Can't say that's something I own at present

I have the same one.
One thing nobody has mentioned about loading the chips; less is more.
If you overload it, or let the box at the bottom get shmutsy, it won't smoke as well.

too much chips equals a dry flame out. gotta soak em.

I've never soaked the chips.
I kind of remember the instructions saying don't, but I don't remember.

Correct, but I figured someone had tried

quote:No, but it makes it much easier, I bought a pencil torch on Amazon for less than $10 just for this. The first time I used the amazen smoker , I tried using a regular stick lighter and it was a pain. I probably used half of the fuel in it before I got it smoking.
Is a torch necessary to light it?

I received one as a gift as well. I have only smoked a prime rib in it so far and it came out great.
Thanks for the tip about not soaking the wood chips above. I was under the assumption we needed to soak them.
Does anyone have a link to some decent recipes for this brand of smoker? I have found a bunch of sites with the Charbroil Big Easy Smoker, but not the Masterbuilt. I'm sure they are very similar, but was hoping for something specifically for the Masterbuilt. I was not pleased with the recipes on the Masterbuilt website and there are only a few youtube video recipes. TIA

I soaked mine and every hour I added a handful of chips. Also mixed the woods to see if it made a difference. I couldn't tell.

I use mixed woods as well. Hickory or pecan with either apple or cherry so far.
