We had a MAJOR setback today
Went to try a lateral raise and pop and numbness immediately I actually dropped the dumbbell even
But I rode the bike for 20 minutes after that just out of frustration

An interesting experiment with interesting results..
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/28925405/
TL;DR they had 51 obese, sedentary guys lose weight in two groups. One group stayed at a 67% deficit for 16 weeks. The other group ate at a 67% deficit for two weeks, then back to their maintenance calories for two weeks and rotated that for 16 weeks.
Of those that followed protocol, the group that did two week cycles lost more weight, and of the weight that was lost, more of it was straight fat. Also, relative resting energy expenditure was higher after 16 weeks in the group that cycles their calories.
ETA
the actual journal
Straight from the PDF from the study..

Specifically, weight loss over the 16-week ER intervention in the INT group was 47% greater than that in the CON group when considering data for all participants randomised or who completed baseline, 58% greater for those who completed the intervention, 53% greater for those who completed the intervention per protocol, and 80% greater for the cohort who were available for the 6-month follow-up.
There was a significantly greater average loss of FM in the INT compared with CON group for those who completed the intervention, those who completed the intervention per protocol, and those who were available for follow-up

Are there any thoughts as to why this happened?

The little bit I've read, it seems as though after 2 weeks is when your body starts to adapt to the lower calories and metabolism becomes more efficient, lowering REE. By cycling the calories, the body doesn't ever fully adapt to the lowered calories.
More experiments are needed, obviously, but that seems to be the general line of thought. And it may not require 2 week intervals... just need more experiments. I'd be really interested in seeing 2 weeks on, 1 week off.
