Having trouble buying for the wife this Christmas, and we need some new pots and pans. We went cheap 5 years ago when we got married-hence the need for new stuff. Would like to spend a little extra to get something decent, but I have no idea where to start. Any recommendations from the F&D peeps?

Bought this set on cyber Monday... looks like it's still on sale, so far so good, really enjoy them.

I wouldn't get her pots and pans, unless she specifically asked for them. Otherwise, I would get her something for her, exclusively.. Even if it's a robe and fuzzy slippers, I wouldn't buy anything that equates to housework.

Don't buy your wife pots and pans or a vacuum cleaner for Christmas.

I understand that point. But, we do a lot of cooking, and she's mentioned it before. We also just had our first baby, so she got jewelry then.

I may hold off on it as a gift for "her" and just get it for "us". It's not like she doesn't do enough around the house with our 7-week old....

I have had my eye on these. I like the measurements in the pot as well as the pour spouts.

Emeril stainless set

ETA: There is also one in a triply that is $100 more that I like as well. Emeril Triply

It looks like there is a 25% off coupon for it as well.

I got a hard anodized frying pan combo from Calphalon last year and they have not held up very well. I don't use metal in the pans but they still scratched up badly with wood. I expected better to be honest. That could have been my mistake though.

Something else to consider is a set of Magnalite pots and pans. I'm guessing a good 80% of Louisiana households have at least one Magnalite pot or pan in them. We have some that are 35 plus years old and still cooking. Granted they're not made exactly like they used to be but still a good cooking vessel. And no they're not the prettiest but they do cook good.

All Clad just started a factory seconds sale again this morning. I've never been able to notice any of blemishes from the seconds I've purchased from them. I could send you the invitation...

1) congrats on the youngin'
2) DO NOT under any circumstances describe or present a pots & pans purchase as a gift to your wife. get her something just for her

you need post & pans, go get pots and pans.
the guys above have given excellent options.

essentials would include a large straight sided sautee pan, a similar smaller sautee pan, a cast iron skillet, a nice heavy dutch oven and a couple smaller sauce pans

that's all i ever use

Yup, pretty much just use cast iron and the stainless set I linked above now.

8" cast iron skillet, 12" cast iron skillet, 10" enameled cast iron skillet, 7.8qt enameled cast iron dutch oven, enameled cast iron 3qt casserole dish.

Don't need much else.

Don't buy non stick. You only need 1 non stick skillet.
I recommend a good quality stainless steel set with a cooper core.
I only use my cast iron for basically everything. Check out America's Test Kitchen recs.

All Clad Copper Core, pricey, but indestructible and great heat control.

I use my cast iron for everything but high acid sauces(long slow simmer on tomato sauce) and quick omlettes. My 12" nonstick pan makes a perfect lid for my 12" cast iron pan though.
