Tomatoes, okra, potato salad; It's all good. Also, I add rice to a bowl of gumbo, not vice versa.

You put your rice in the pot and simmer it? Or perhaps you should read my post again?

I'll dive into this logic query...

quote:

Person A says I only like traditional ingredients in my gumbo. I use a roux, Trinity, stock, and meat over rice

A traditional gumbo

quote:

then finish it off with potato salad.

This is an additive and not traditional. It is a traditional side to gumbo, but a gumbo, it does not make.

quote:

Could you not then reasonably say person A believes potato salad is traditional since he "only likes traditional ingredients in his gumbo"?

No and yes. No that is not sound logic, objectively speaking. To the individual, it may be traditional if that, as a tradition in his family, is how gumbo was served. I wouldn't consider crackers a part of a traditional gumbo. I would call it a traditional accompaniment to said gumbo.

quote:

My logic is that if someone is a stickler for what they consider traditional ingredients then EVERY SINGLE ingredient they use is one they deem traditional.

Well then that would make tomatoes traditional, as the other poster said, seeing as "tradition" is determined by the individual, not the dish.

My opinion: Potato salad is a traditional SIDE to go with gumbo. I've tried taking a spoon of potato salad then dip in the gumbo. I don't like it. I think it masks the flavor of the gumbo and the potato salad, so in my opinion, you are desecrating the gumbo, HEATHEN!

2) Tomatoes in gumbo is traditional if you don't know how to make gumbo. Stop forcing your terrible taste buds on America.

That probably sounds better.

This is what I'm saying. It's traditional for creole gumbo makers. Traiditonal is a relative term. Traditional American potato salad for instance is very different from traditional gean potato salad.

I agree with that, but not the real because I like it

I keep it on the side though so I can still have the normal spoon of gumbo if I want.

The word "Traditional" has a very vague definition.

I don't get it. Potato salad makes a gumbo taste like a bland goopy mess and the gumbo completely masks the flavor of the potato salad. I fight this battle with my wife's family constantly.

I prefer rice but I upvoted. Think it tastes great both ways.
