Saw it on Slickdeals and snagged one around Lafayette for $109.

Pit Boss Series 5 Vertical Pellet Smoker

Brickseek Inventory Check

Figured I'd share if anyone was looking for a pellet smoker on the cheap.

Their website (walmart.com) doesn't show the in-store price (I plugged the store that had it for $109, and it still showed $446). But there are some stores that dropped it to $109, and some that still have some at regular price. So YMMV.

Brickseek's info was spot on in my situation.

Store I went to had it under a $199 clearance sign, but when they scanned it, it was $109.

I entered my zip into the search at top and it came back as the reduced $109 price.

Same here, and I'd be a bit leery as to why a product is discounted to just less than 1/4 of it's original price.

Because the people who purchased them are all saying it’s a huge piece of shite. Some are saying that it basically just falls apart.

5 year warranty for a $109.99 pellet smoker was worth the risk for me personally. But I don't think I would have bit at a higher price.

The reviews. It’s pretty obvious most of them are fake.

This sounds real:

quote:

The people with 5 star reviews must not have any experience smoking. The temperature swings make this unfit for smoking. Set at 225 this smoker goes from 180 to 260...Back and forth every 10 min or so. That's with a box built around the smoker to try and keep the temp in and limit the swings. Not worth what I paid, hopefully I can return it.

Probably some baw from New Delhi:

quote:

After Assembly, it was great. Cooked 3 briskets and some sausage at the same time. i might of cooked sausage a little too long, but it was my very !st time using a smoker. BUT the briskets came out good. I used to live in Texas where a lot of BBQ was excellent. I moved to Tucson and there is not a really authentic BBQ restaurant. So i wanted to make my own but do not like to baby sit it for hours.

quote:

Works great. Set it an go about your day. Smoked a brisket for 11 hours while i went out hunting and fishing. The rig makes plenty of smoke with the lid screwed down low.

Sure ya did, pal

Please note that this can NOT be set outside in weather. If pallets gets wet or absorb moisture and expand in auger feed tube, the auger will jam. To clear the jam, you will have to remove ALL the parts mounted under the smoker before the auger can be removed. It is 1/2 day of work. There is no direct access to the auger shaft to tap on it as you may expect. Called the service center - The auger jam "IS NOT COVERED by WARRENTY" so says the service rep. and "parts are not available right now". Use it twice and done. To maint. the unit - Unless you use it all the time, you will want to remove ALL the pallets after you use it or you may be taking it apart to clear the auger. for those like me only use it once a month, wood chip smoker will be a lot better choice. this is a very very poorly designed smoker.

An indoor smoker?

They address this topic in the manual:

quote:

After a period of storage, or non-use, check the burn pot for obstructions, the hopper for foreign objects, and any air blockage around the fan intake or rear barrel exhaust holes. Clean before use. Regular care and maintenance is required to prolong the lifespan of your unit. If the smoker is stored outside during the rainy season or seasons of high humidity, care should be taken to insure that water does not get into the hopper. When wet or exposed to high humidity, wood pellets will expand greatly, decompose, and may jam the feed system. Always disconnect the power, before performing any service or maintenance.

You aren't supposed to treat the hopper like a long-term storage container for pellets.

There's a thread on pelletfans.com addressing the temperature swings as well, they recommend always including the water pan directly above the flame tamer box.

Look baw, don't be jelly you missed the deal.

ETA: I don't even know why I'm defending it, it's just a $109 purchase I haven't even used yet.

I'm not. I saw it a month ago and thought about it. I've already got three smokers. I hope it works well. But, when I saw 3 bad reviews a few weeks ago, and now there's over 30 AND it's on sale for $109, I'm skeptical.

Visually, it's pretty impressive. You definitely can fit a lot of food in it.

Yea, I showed my old man and he said for 76% off, it probably causes cancer.

I'll see how it goes this weekend.

I actually got this smoker for Christmas. Used it this past weekend. Cooked whole chickens, pork loins, ribs and sausage. It all turned out really well. Temperature stayed pretty constant throughout the day - I only noticed one weird temp swing. Glad I read this about the pellets staying in the hopper, going to take them all out today.

I highly doubt mine was purchased at this price, but $109 seems like a hell of a deal to me!

Just picked up the OK Joes Highland at Wal-Mart for $64. Check your local wally, with 100 bucks at most in mods you have a great smoker for 4-6.
