Monkey pod is good I went to the one in Maui twice.

The problem for him is the the one in Oahu is on Ko’olina which isn’t super convenient from Waikiki. But I do like it.

Well we haven't decided between renting a car, doing the bus, or just Uber/Lyft

Hawaii is awesome. However, in my opinion, the food sucks. My sister lived there for 5 years. I did enjoy Giovanni’s shrimp truck if you are on the Northshore.

Rent the car if you’re going outside of Honolulu.

Yep. We did a couple of excursions from our resort back in 2007. The last day we were going to do a couple of things before catching the red eye to LAX. Since we were flying back to BHM the resort couldn’t check our luggage for us all the way home. We would have had to retrieve and recheck it either in LA or Houston so we ended up renting a small Jeep SUV and had a great time driving around the island. Ended up at the Dole Pineapple place and some other stuff. I drove on H1, H2, and H3 that day. Didn’t realize there were “interstates” in Hawaii.

I can’t recommend any places to eat. We had most meals at the resort and I’m sure much has changed in 14 years.

Find someone doing a fundraiser cooking huli-huli chicken. When I lived there you could find them every weekend. Usually in grocery store parking lots. Just follow your nose.

You really only need the car if you’re going to the Northshore or Windward side. So for the day essentially.

If you’re a Costco member check them. Always the best rates and super flexible.

There are also a ton of local car rental places that may have cheap day deals

Was just looking through my credit card and for the days I'm going it is as much as my hotel. Which I know I'm catching a deal with. 4* on the beach for 200 a day is fantastic at least imo

We did the Hole in the Wall food tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. But that was also 11 years ago.

Another food-related activity we loved was the Honolulu Fish Market. It was really interesting seeing these massive fish being auctioned just off the boat. Also a great thing to do on your first day when you wake up at 3am. It was free when we went, but I heard they've started charging. Not sure I'd pay too much for it.

Not a food rec, but definitely check out the Pill Box hike and Lanikai beach. It’s the best beach on the island, IMO and I’ve been to most of them.

I don’t really have food recs for Honolulu, because we stayed in Kailua/Kaneohe most of the time for our trips, but Tamura has really good poke, and the garlic chicken from the random plate lunch spots is typically good.

It's been years and I'm not sure if these places are still open or with covid restrictions, but Nico's Pier 38 for their catch of the day, Waiola Shaved Ice(hawaiian sno-balls), Sugoi for their spicy garlic chicken, Kuru Kuru Sushi for some cheap conveyor belt sushi, Best poke on the island would be found in Hawaii's supermarket(Foodland), Boots N Kimo's for the mac nut pancakes, Dole Plantation for their pineapple whip, KCC Farmer's Market for some Big Island Abalone, Helena's for traditional Hawaiian food, Giovanni's Shrimp truck, Leonard's Malasada puffs for their holeless filled donuts, and if you have room in your check baggage[I would make room], I would suggest picking up Maui Gold pineapples at the grocery store as gifts/souvenirs for family and friends.

Opal Thai. Best Thai food I've ever had. Let Opal decide your menu.

One of my favorite memories of Oahu was driving to the North Shore, sampling the Shrimp Trucks, and enjoying the scenery at our own pace, stopping whenever and wherever we wanted. Roy’s was fantastic!

Definitely this.

We enjoyed Romy's shrimp on the North Shore. Be prepared for a long wait, but it's worth it.

House Without A Key had good food with really nice sunset views.

Great list!!

Ate at Merriman’s last week for lunch and the food was fantastic. We just did apps, but all were great. Shrimp, octopus, poke, hummus and khalua pork quesadilla.

Roy’s in Hawaii Kai was just ok. Nothing to write home about for us.

Leonard’s, Helena’s, and Sidestreet Inn are also really good.
