re: Phrases you hate hearing from food critics...

Full-bodied, lush - those words mean nothing to me.
Saccharin - is that better than sweet?
Yummy - makes me think they aren't even trying
But I guess we need to cut them some slack. There's not much you can do to describe something you can't see to help put it in perspective. At least on design shows, we can see the things their pretentious adjectives describe.
Ever had a romantic evening with a lady and found yourself planting kisses near the backside....and realized your lady friend should have showered before taking the relationship to this level? That my friend, is an "earthy" scent. I think of it every time I hear food critics use that phrase and tell myself, "Well no thank you, I'll pass on that."
Some phrases get to me when used to describe a food I just didn't want to hear. I think I mentioned this example before, but I've never had mountain oysters. So when I watched Andrew Zimmern bite into one and go, "Oh my...that is creamy", I wanted to gag.
But when this lady below uses the same phrase when biting into an eclair, I become speechless with delight for some reason.
She loves me. She just doesn't know it yet.

How about wine? "It's bold without being pretentious. A healthy dose of nutty and fruity with a dash of whimsy."
If you haven't yet, see the movie "Sideways". There's a few more of those in there for sure.

If only they weren't so friggin expensive, I would use them in so many ways. I saw a little blurb a few weeks ago about a shop in Italy, man they make a killing at the cash register.

When Andrew Zimmerman describes something as "having a mineraly, rancid taste with the consistency of microwaved vasoline" and then in the same breath say "it's quite delicious"
Uh...wut?
Uh...wut?

Andrew Zimmern is the worst about using ridiculous descriptive words that make no sense.
