Doing a remodel and bought a 36" gas range. Specs say I need a 36" hood. Every "36-inch" I pull up is somewhere between 33.5 and 35". I can't go to a 42" because the range sits between two existing windows (41.5" apart). The outside to outside of the burners is 33.5". Do I really need a "true 36"" hood or would a 34-35" be acceptable?

Also, what is your recommended vent insert 36" x 24" (nominal)?

TIA

If you got those windows like you say you do, why don't you go with the smaller vent and open the windows.

Try to see if you can find a 40” hood since 42” won’t fit. Ideally, you’d want 3” of coverage on each side of your range. The smoke, steam, and heat will go outward from your burners as well, so it’s best to have that covered.

There are sheet metal companies that will build you a vent hood to the size you want. They'll also do the duct work to your vent outside. Also, earlier poster was correct on getting the right sized fan and motor. And make sure you get good filters as well that are easy to pull and clean if the owner will cook a lot.

Hood def needs to overhang stove by at least 3” on either side or it won’t capture the steam/heat rising from the stove. Why bother to put up a hood if it’s not efficient or effective.

Just went though this. Bough a cheap O and it couldn't suck candle smoke away from the stove. Cut my losses and bought a higher CFM fan and units night and day.

OP, 33" should be fine.
