don't understand the hate Rouses gets on this board.

Have you not read this thread or any of the others on this place? Their propensity to sale old and or rancid meat in itself is enough not to shops there. Haven’t even touched on their customer service.

And yes.... the catering food at Alexander’s is significantly better. Both the wife and I (along with many friends) have ordered from both for work and for some
Side items for tailgating. Reason why we gave Rouses a try was b/c the cost was cheaper... read my first post and see why it is.
The Ol boy who is the butcher at Alexander’s will do anything for you that he can and is nice as can be. From cutting marrow bones, to getting different cuts of meat in the back if you don’t like what’s in the case. You ever talk to one of those guys at Rouses? Don’t even get me started on that fish counter...

My buddy who lives in Zachary along with all the guys I know up there hate that fricking store, but you have to shop there if you live on that side of town. I’ve been friends with this dude for 25 yrs and now I don’t want him near anything I cook that is raw... he fricking smells everything and thinks everything is rancid. Want to guess why.... that’s how often he got fricked by Rouses in the short time they have been there. Never was an issue with Leblancs.

Look, I’ve tried to give them a chance. They are near my home and I had good experiences with them when I lived on the coast when they moved in. They just expanded too fast and must not have the right people in local management.

So, it’s alexanders b/c the cashiers know me and my wife and they treat her well. Even the younger employees there treat people the right way. Plus, they have that deal where you can get gift certificate/store credit for shopping with them. Can spend $10 or $100 and they will put it towards your account. I also go out of my way to frequent Calandros, used to live near them and I like the way they (along with Alexander’s) support local products. Not that Rouses doesn’t, just they are more worried about having Rouses brand cheese than anything else. Also, will try to buy my steaks from calandros as well. Always good meat and cut the right sizes. Oh and uh.... beer.

Went a couple times when it first opened, similar experience, back to alexanders.

May be a little more expensive, but all the stuff is good quality and in the rare times we have had a problem they immediately make it right.

I've had problems with Alexanders and Rouses.

At Rouses. I bought an 8 piece chicken and got all wings and thighs. Another time got only 7 pieces.

At Alexanders. My wife bought a chicken to cook the same day. It was a day or two past expired. She didn't check. Just about knocked us out. Went back and there were 3 others that were also expired. So check dates at both of those places.

I know this really doesn't help the situation, but everytime I read this thread I feel fortunate to have my HEB here in Houston. Never once have I ran into a situation where I have bought rancid meat...I couldn't even imagine shopping and wondering if this pork or beef may be rancid when I open it up at home.

Every store has sold bad meat before. You just havent grabbed it.

BR has plenty of good grocery stores to get quality products.

Wife picked up chicken there about a year ago. It didn’t smell right when she opened it the next day. She threw it away, figured something happened and it was her fault. Went to Alexander’s to get more chicken. Same cashier was there and the wife told her what happened. Not to get anything free, but just complaining she must of did something wrong and the chicken went bad. Just general convo.... The manager came over and heard. Said that shouldn’t have happened and didn’t charge her for the chicken she was trying to buy.
Maybe he did that b/c we shop there for 90% of our groceries and he recognized her. Maybe he did it b/c that’s what kind of service they want to provide... either way I’m good with it and it’s why I go back every week.

Never said that HEB didn't sell bad meat and Tigerdroppings F&D Board isn't necessary a statistically significant sample size, but there is obviously a frequency issue at Rouses that is significantly higher than the grocery store that I routinely visit.

I buy all my meat generally from Alexanders and have never had an issue. I think it happens in all stores from time to time, but its not something to worry about there for sure.

Calvin's has become the only store I shop at in BR.

They have Evangeline Maid bread. Also, non-rotten meat and vegetables.

Like all other companies today, they changed the formula for a less expensive method and Evangeline Maid isn't as soft and doesn't stay fresh as long. Very disappointing.

i was very excited to see rouses coming to the area. but, after bad meat and produce on several occasions, i gave up on them. I really miss the leblanc's in p'ville

I don't understand how y'all keep getting "bad" meat and/or produce??

So walk me through it, when you get over to the bell peppers for example of the hundred bell peppers that are there do you dig through them all and get a bad one and put in your buggy and go check it out?

And when you get back to the meat counter you don't ask your butcher for fresh ground meat??

I sure hear a lot of bitching about grocery stores, but it sounds like y'all really don't know how to shop. (all those complaining)

It all starts with the district manager, and flows down to the department managers. What’s acceptable??

there is no excuse for buying very bad produce, but i shouldnt have to ask the butcher to grind some meat in order to get fresh meat
