I have a birthday coming up in less than 2 weeks and was looking for a nice place that me and my gf could go to in NOLA. I've been to Commander's and heard great things about Galatoire's, August, Antoine's, etc but looking for something in a smaller price range. $20ish entrees type deal. Money is tight and I still want a nice NOLA dining experience...but maybe for 20 bucks cheaper than what Commander's or August is serving up

Appreciate any recs.

Galatoire's is really not that expensive. Sylvain and La Petite Grocery are other good choices. Maybe Jacques Imo's if you are looking for a more laid back atmosphere ...

Agree

OP, you listed "more formal" dining places. If that is what you seek. Uptown is probably a good place to look.

Patois
Upperline (haven't been in a while)
Coquette

None are formal, but nice atmospheres. Good food as well.

I'm liking the selections here. Might be my winner.

Don't know if this fits into your budget, but Muriel's has a fixed price dinner for about 38 bucks that includes an app, entree and dessert. I think it's a great deal. The food is very good as is the atmosphere. Good location right at Jackson Square for walking around a bit before or after dinner.

Doesn't has to be a super formal place. I just know when I hear "great nola dining" I think of the one's I listed.

Clearly there are more (some at a smaller price range) which is why I'm asking here. Boucherie and Sylvain's are looking like winners so far.

That isn't a bad deal at all considering the food you are getting. Assuming you've been before? Quality meal?

I've been many many times and the meal has always been very good. I've eaten both brunch and dinner there on a number of occasions. It's a very good deal. Nice bar area and the Seance room is pretty cool to visit upstairs. You can go up on the balcony for a cocktail and overlook Jackson Square if there isn't a private party going on. Maybe you'll meet the resident ghost.

For folks who want to stay within a budget assuming you don't break the bank with cocktails , it's a great deal. In fact, to me, the price of the full meal allows for a few more cocktails!

Oh yeah. Muriel's is top notch. You will get a lot of food for the money with the 3 course meal deal

I'd say Muriel's is decent.

It's not going to blow anyone away with what they serve, but it certainly won't be a bad meal either.

They're not reinventing the wheel there, which can sometimes be desirable, depending upon what you're looking for.

This is how I see it. I've never been a big fan. It's a beautiful restaurant with a great balcony, but that's it. Living in New Orleans, this is a place I would never choose with so many other great restaurants.

My meals have always been more than just decent. I believe it's a well above average restaurant, food quality is excellent. I agree that it's not going to blow your socks off. It's not that type of eclectic restaurant. It's a great deal for a great meal for what the restaurant is. I enjoy it.

The Muriel's suggestion is good. the pre fix menu is solid.

Boucherie would be the best one imo.

Upperline offers a three or four course meal for around $40. Given the quality of the food, I would say that it's a good bargain.
