NOLA Ice Cream
Posted by Matisyeezy on 7/15/20 at 1:42 am27
So we all know that Creole Creamery is a thing. They have some really solid flavors. But right now there's a thriving scene of boutique, I hesitate to call them creameries, but I'll use the term for convenience's sake.
1) Laozi Ice Cream
Absolutely decadent. Tastes like fancy arse Reese's, but the texture is next level creamy. To me, this is some of the best I've ever had. Look this guy up, enjoy his product.
2) Lucy Boone Ice Cream
"Small batch ice cream using local ingredients" is the description. Cool, that's literally everyone, and yet this is what you get. In this case it's small scale with attention to detail, but also a sense of adventure. You want fig? Sure, we got it. Pictured is a chocolate caramel concoction, but the choices are diverse.
Summary is, skip Blue Bell. Look local. There are some people doing micro batches that are way better than what you'd get otherwise. I named two, but there are more. And the two I named are wonderful, so please give them some love if you want to support a tiny business.

Lucy Boone cold brew ice cream with chocolate cookie and caramel swirl is killer. They have some other interesting flavors I'd like to try like sweet corn with blueberries.

They are at Thalia pop up market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

They got a brick and mortar store or is it sold out of somewhere else?

He's selling out of Monkey Monkey Coffee & Tea on S Carrollton right now. It's super small scale, so it doesn't last long, but I can attest to the quality of what I got.

Good lord. Even Jeni's Splendid is only $9/pint. What's the milk source? If it's ordinary commodity milk, then it better not be ultra premium priced.

I think this one was $17/quart. It ain't cheap, but it's in the same price ballpark as something like Jeni's. We happened to have a pint of Jeni's chocolate peanut butter in the freezer and I preferred the local product by a lot.
It's definitely a luxury purchase that's meant to be enjoyed, but if you're looking for quality, I think this guy is doing it. I don't know him, I just visited with him for a few minutes when I picked up, but he seems nice as can be. I don't mind paying a little more to support a local.
The Lucy Boone stuff is $9/pint, which also isn't cheap, but same thing applies.

id pay it. was just curious. I make ice cream on the side and there is certainly an art to small, hand crafted batches

Sundae Best is a fairly new joint in the bywater doing small batch creams

Does anyone know of any frozen custard ice cream in the nola area? Like Culver’s type soft serve frozen custard. From the Midwest and sometimes that’s the only thing that scratches the itch.

Friend of mine is opening up an Abbott’s frozen custard on Toulouse St., but opening has been delayed by COVID. Use to love in WI and also crave custard every now and then.
