Just go into spec's in downtown and ask. Their staff is quite knowledgeable on stuff like this, you'll be surprised.

Not really enough info to help you. What is his go to scotch?

ETA: If he hasn't had the Dalmore Cigar Malt, give it a try. Its about $130-150 depending on where you shop.

I'm not an expert on scotch but I know a little. I've literally never heard of any of those

They're all 18+ so that's a good sign

Deanston is good. Are you sure the specs people don't make a commission for certain bottles.

No not sure but they usually have good people working there. He showed me like 10 of em and I picked those 3. I did a quick search of each before I bought and it sounds like they are all pretty nice.

I have never heard of these either.

Because they are "exclusive" to Specs and the only place you'll find those brands in Texas. 95% of the key tag sales are. Wines, vodka, whiskey, tequilas, etc that you'll never see anywhere else. They will always be on the same "special" deal 365, and those are the items you will be suggested because the employee will be making money off of you. Each month there are about 10 pages updated on the "PM" list (pocket money).

I'm not saying these products are bad, there are very good brands I would definitely pick over major names. Hell, when Clown Shoes came to specs there was a $1 per bottle PM. Next time you go, look at the white shelf tag under the red sale signs and look at the top right corner. If it says WD, you're being suggested something and they're making $ off you. Anywhere from $1 to $10, some of the best PMs are in scotch, but don't feel bad about it. District managers and store managers get a % of their stores sales of PMs so they will always want the employees to suggest exclusive products over what you came for. Don't bother asking if they make money because they are told not to admit it... And now you know, the rest of the story.
