So far I have a 1/3 success rate
Just ruined what could have been a decent batch of gumbo
Never burn it when I actually make it but if I throw the jarred stuff in something seems to go wrong for me

I use it most of the time and I’ve never had any problems with it.

I haven’t used jar roux in over a decade, no regrets.

I don't know what I did but something definitely seems off about it

You can't go wrong with this one

I used ragin cajun brand
I'm going to let things simmer for a while and see if maybe the flavors come together but it's not looking good right now

How the hell are you burning jarred roux? It's literally already made for you

Should have cooked it down some more after getting out of the jar.
Also it sometimes take some simmer time to get flour taste out but I’ve made huge gumbos every year using jar roux and have had plenty of people say it’s great gumbo. It’s flour and oil, nothing different.

I don’t use that shite either Powerman. I’m a purist. Oil, flour, black cast iron skillet, wooden spoon, fire, elbow grease and time.
Then I add a can of diced tomatoes.

Main reason I make my own over using a jar is I prefer my roux darker than what you can buy. plus I use different fats

No. I’m on record as the one that adds tomatoes. And I’ve always made my roux, it’s just how I’ve always done it. If I don’t have time I just make chicken soup.

I've used the jar before but it is a mess to get out of the jar. I do my own now, it takes me a long time because I don't want to burn it but it is always good.

Not cooking it over an open fire in the woods with a fire started with two sticks? Jar roux is just too easy not to use

You’re just stupid if you want to sit there and make a large amount of roux for a huge pot of gumbo. Thousand percent better off using jar roux and spending other time cutting up fresh trinity , precooking okra, making stock, than stirring together flour and oil for an hour when the shite in the jar is the same and works just as well.

Dump that jar into a pot with just a little oil/lard, you can cook it a little darker, add your veggies to stop to cooking before you burn it.

Or make it in the microwave in 12 minutes

So people who actually want to make a homemade roux are stupid? I guess your grandparents were stupid?
I can put a frozen apple pie in the oven and it tastes as good as most homemade apple pies I’ve had. Should no one make a homemade apple pie?
Not make a red gravy because we can dump Ragu, in 31 flavors, over too well done spaghetti?
Not roast a chicken because we can buy rotisserie chicken at every corner store?
Well by god if we are 1000 percent better off using the jar then what the hell are we thinking?
If it takes you an hour to make a roux than you don’t know how to make a roux so yes you should stick to the jar. Dump that can of chicken broth in it as well.
Calling someone stupid for cooking in a traditional way is stupid.
