Are they all basically the same or should I do some actual research? I’ve never ventured into homemade ice cream before but it has been requested so here I am.

They are not the same.

America's test kitchen had a really good product comparison on them. I can't remember the winner, but it's worth looking into.

We have a Cuisinart and it works well, really simple to use. I think it was around $50 but we have had it for several years so not sure what the price is now.

It came with a recipe book that has a pretty good vanilla ice cream recipe that is easy to make, just mix up the ingredients and pour into the machine, come back in 25 minutes and you have home-made ice cream.

We have the Cuisinart as well. Works well enough. Can make some great mint chocolate chip ice cream steaping in crushed mint.

An ice cream maker sounds like a great gift for someone that enjoys cooking.

If it's the wife or a kid or 2, check out a Donvier. Has a liner/canister you put in the freezer so can have a couple or 3 of them frozen ready to go always.

I use the blender with milk, sugar, teaspoon of corn starch to keep ice crystals tiny, and a flavoring like vanilla and some fresh picked mint, chocolate chips, cocoa powder... whatever I feel like. (ice milk, not really cream, but substitute away, the corn starch also helps give a creamy mouth feel)

Blend, pour into the canister, spin the handle using index finger for about 10 minutes and start eating.

Has a tupperware kinda lid for the canister too so just remove canister from the cuplike holder and pop into freezer any leftovers.

I have the basic KitchenAid version with a gel-filled freezer canister that rotates, while a plastic paddle attached to the cover scrapes the sides. It’s nice to have 2 of the freezer canisters if you’re into multiple flavors or want to experiment. Otherwise, you’ve got to make, scrape out, wash canister, and re-freeze before you can do another batch.

Honestly, I rarely use it. I should make some fruit ice cream for this holiday weekend...thanks fo the inspiration!

I love ice cream, and have 2 ice cream makers - a Cuisinart countertop one, and the old school outside one that needs ice and rock salt. Hamilton Beach I think is the brand of the latter.

They both make fine ice cream, the Cuisinart is a lot quicker and easier. I use it way more than the other, though it only make 1.5 quarts. So if I need more, I use the other one.

Cuisinart with an extra freeze canister.

Has been a work horse for quite a few years.
