I chose to get out of that life mainly because I wanted a family & I knew my personality & that following that career path any further would not allow me a successful family like I had envisioned. So I was fortunate enough to get out into an entirely different career path. I now have a wife & two kids that adore their Daddy & I don't regret the decision one bit. (especially after seeing what Covid did to the industry - my goodness)
The high-stress, hours & workload take a serious toll on your personal life & you both have to be willing to face that fact. I say "you both" because he will likely not be home to celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas, Father's Day, Mother's Day, etc. And when you do finally get to see or talk to him on those days, he will probably be coming off of a 12 hour shift & the holiday cheer will be sucked right outta him. The work/life balance is almost always going to tilt in favor of work.
I've really enjoyed this thread. Very educational about a profession that intrigues me (but I never flirted with pursuing).
This part is what I always thought would keep a certain type of person away from the profession - it seems like it'd be really hard to live a wholesome, family-centered life. I'm sure it can be and is done, but I suspect you'll be an extreme minority in doing so.

If he is at the point of going off to school, he can get a degree in Hospitality, hopefully with some business courses thrown in. I think Southern in Hattiesburg, MS offers the degree, but other schools also offer it. Then he needs to go to CIA of he can. If there is any way, he needs to work in the field now to make sure he is willing to take the abuse and workload in that business. If you want to be successful it can't be a 9-5 40 hour a week job. See if Robert St.John in Hattiesburg would be willing to meet with him. The guy understands the business and likes to help people.
Just saw you are in Houston. There are probably people there that would talk to him. It really is a high pressure occupation. with many ways to become successful and a worrisome probability of failure.
U of H's Hilton college of hospitality is supposed to be really good. That at least gets you a degree that can be used outside of the kitchen
work a restaurant while in school

Anything Hospitality is going to be a crazy work schedule and far from 9-5 until you have some significant experience like 15-20 years or more most likely. I know a couple of people that work in hotel and resort management and they work hard, voluntarily take whatever job their company needs them to do (as in move around a lot), etc. They enjoy it but its far from a life for everyone.
Personally I dont see a degree in Hospitality really being necessary, but if the OP wants to put his son into school now then I do agree it makes sense as a degree to follow. It sounds like his son is lost and or spoiled though and without a great passion and path I'm not sure normal college for Hospitality is really going to change that.
I really think 6 months in a kitchen working his arse off and seeing that lifestyle is what he needs, it will either chew him up and spit him out really quickly or he'll fall in love and want to continue working his arse off to make it. That's really the only path in that field IMO.
