My House Wines for 2020
Posted on 8/19/20 at 1:07 pm
Posted on 8/19/20 at 1:07 pm
Each year I try to find “house wines”; wines that are delicious, but inexpensive enough to serve every day. I’ve found four so far this year, two reds and two whites. All four wines sell for well under $20. Since the Odd Lot wines may not be familiar to some of you, I'll include an image of the bottle and label. Enjoy!
Reds:
2017 Odd Lot
This is a blend of 80% Petite Sirah, 20% Petit Verdot from the Scheid Vineyards of Napa Valley. A lot of bang for the buck. The grapes are from Monterey County. Odd Lot also does a blend of 50% cabernet sauvignon and 50% Syrah. It’s good, but not nearly as good IMO. The 2018 Odd Lot is out now, and while I have a couple of bottles of it in my wine fridge, I haven’t tried it yet. I don’t expect a drop off in quality though. So far every vintage of this wine has been excellent.
2017 Bogle Petite Sirah
I loved the 2016, and the 2017 is very close in quality. 88 points from Wine Enthusiast; 89 from Wilfred Wong
Whites:
2019 Joel Gott Sauvignon Blanc
This is a very consistent wine year in and year out, but the 2019 vintage is especially good. 92 points from Wine Spectator.
2019 Kendall-Jackson Vintner’s Reserve Sauvignon Blanc
This was a surprise for me because it's not a wine I normally buy. A blend of 94% Sauv Blanc, 5% Semillon, 1% Roussanne. Wilfred Wong, the reviewer for wine.com gave it 89 points. Had a bottle of it last night with spicy Thai food and it was a match made in heaven

My BIL brought over a bottle of Hayes Valley Cab this past weekend. For around $11 a bottle I was very impressed before even hearing the price point.
76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot
ETA: 2017 had a 91 score from Wine Enthusiast.

Are you a fan of Ravenswood? I find them to be a solid under $12 option.

That Bogle is a deal for the quality.

Gave Silver Ghost a whirl from Total Wine the other day. It was $23'ish and I would put it just below Quilt which comes in at $37'ish usually (which is hard to stomach since the wholesale price is $18-$19).
Also a fan of J Lohr Hilltop from Paso Robles. It is usually dependable and in that $22-$24 range.
Justin has a really good Sauvignon Blanc as well that's in that mid-high teen range.

quote:I know their entry level Zinfandel is popular, but I havent't tried it in years. When I'm in the mood for zinfanel (which is pretty often), my go-to is Bogle Phantom. I can get it for around $16 on sale and it's hard to beat for the price.

Cruz Alta 100% Cab Sav Reserve (Argentina) - $12.99
Mascota Cab Franc (Argentina) - $15
San Gregorio Las 75 Vendimias (Spain) - $15ish
Uro Toro La Enfermera Tempranillo (Spain) - $10
I've tried all of these recently because I was spending too much during the week on wine. Spain, South America and Italy all have a ton of quality for cheap.

Not sure what it is, but Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc is always on point and never lets me down.

I love your wine lists because you lean heavily in the petite sirah range just like I do. I am not familiar with the first one, I don’t think it is sold in my stores.
Bogle is a great value. Heads up to you or anybody reading that they are giving three dollars per bottle cashback from now through August 31 if you have bought any recently. I am about to mail in a receipt that is worth $18 in cash back.
On the train, I’ve been liking the Château Saint Michelle Indian Wells version Cabernet. It’s about $17 and very good.
CS Cabernet also great in the $20-$25 range.

quote:Thanks LL. And yes, when you're talking Q2P, petite sirah is hard to beat. Most of the cabs I've tried in this price range have strong vegetable notes that i find really off-putting. One excpetion is the 2017 Edna Valley Cabernet Sauvigon. It's very good (although not as good as the Bogle Petite Sirah IMO) for about $15.

No help with whites or anything outside cab/cab blends, but here’s a few in that space.
Joel Gott 815 Cab for the money is very good - $15
Louis Martini cab from Sonoma is great as well. Of course NAPA is better but Sonoma is 1/2 the price -$17
For a little blend the Charles Krug Cabernet is 87 Cab with Merlot and Petit Verdot. A little pricier but very impressive for $23
Kirkland’s Stag Leap District Cab - $23. Buy by the case. It is the best wine you will ever drink at $23.
I am still on hunt for an inexpensive Petit Verdot & Cab Franc. A true inexpensive Napa Bordeaux is also being hunted. Would love rec’s under $30.

CS is very good but it's more in the $15 range don't pay that much for it.
The Petite Sirah crowd might want to check out Oak Ridge, that's another good value.

Looks like there aren’t any Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc fans on this thread.
