I received this as a birthday present and don’t have the first clue how to use it. Like, I know nothing. Is there a certain type of charcoal I should buy for it? Any help, tips, or tricks would be awesome and greatly appreciated! Anxious to try it out.

Use lump charcoal. Do not use lighter fluid.

My brother (who probably doesn’t know what he’s talking about) said to buy the kind that looks like bark. Is that true? And can I find that anywhere they sell regular charcoal?
I was at rouses earlier and all I saw was charcoal “beignets” I think it said on all bags. It looked like little squares.

Get whole lump charcoal
B&B Hickory is pretty safe bet

quote:Pretty much. If you have a Home Depot near you, I think the Royal Oak is pretty good. They usually have it for a good price.

Home Depot sells Royal Oak lump for about $9 for a 15lb bag.
ETA that sumbitch will get hot as fire so move it at least 5ft from the house before using.

Briquettes?
Yes. That was it. I’m losing my mind. Must have been hungry when I was there.

Thanks for the tip. I’m terrified of a house fire.

I used to have one of these and loved it. Wish I still had one. Great smoker/grill combo.
First, its not ceramic. Its a steel shell wrapped in insulation. But it works like a green egg/kamado joe, etc.
Like others have said, use lump charcoal, the briquettes. Royal Oak is great and easy to find.
Also, you'll need to adjust the airflow using the dampers on the top and bottom of the grill depending on what you are cooking. With both wide open, your grill will get seriously hot, and the charcoal will burn faster. Use this setting for things like searing steaks.
If you want to smoke things, leave the dampers almost closed to keep it low and make the fuel last longer.
The only thing I hate about this grill is its a pain to add more fuel mid cook.
and happy grilling!

By ceramic she meant egg shaped.

They make a ceramic now. Have not seen one though.
Cork, get some wax cubes to start the charcoal. All you have to do is make a hole, throw the cube in, light it and the cover the fire and you are done.

She can use lighter fluid in that one.

Always fill the firebox up with charcoal. It's better to have too much than not enough later for your cooks. Low an slow, light in the middle once. High heat, light in multiple locations. Once the fire goes out and you see glowing coals with a little smoke close the lid. I always keep the bottom damper an inch open and only use the top damper to regulate temperature.

Get a small flame torch to lite your coals. So easy and no mess.
