Heading to Montreal tomorrow and will be staying in Plateau Royal area. Any first hand recommendations for good places to eat and drink?

Nothing too fancy and obviously poutine.

Au pied du Cochon ... Go hungry

I'd also check out the dieu du ciel brew pub. You can get poutine most anywhere.

If you can get a chance, go to Joe Beef. It is awesome. Most of the terraces in old Montreal are fun places for drinks especially for happy hour. You will probably have to take a bike or uber down there. Schwartz Deli is pretty famous, but was overrated to me. We didn't do a ton of casual food and poutine is too heavy to eat for dinner if you are going out. Lots of good ethnic Chinese, but obviously not what you think about in Montreal.

Cadet is pretty good and more casual than its sister restaurant. Au Pied de Cochon is by where you are staying and is excellent. Waverly and L’Assommoir are good mile end bars.

I spent 5 days there very recently, and did a food tour the first day, then followed our guides suggestions the remainder of the trip. I'll try and remember the names of everything...

Brit and Chips is an awesome little fish and chips joint in Old Montreal. Seriously the best F&C I've ever had. It's on Rue McGill.

3 blocks towards the river is a restaurant and brewery called Bistro-Brasserie Les Soeurs Grises that i enjoyed.

Schwartz deli will appear on every tourist recommendation you see, and it's absolutely worth waiting in line. Smoked meat sandwiches. Very similar to Texas brisket, minus the smoke flavor. Trust me, just try it. (As I see a differing opinion above ) Granted, it was 10:30 at night, and we were very drunk.

For poutine, you will likely see La Banquise recommended in publications, as it has several different types of poutine and a microbrew inside. SKIP IT! Just across the street is Ma Poule Mouillee. It has amazing portugese chicken dishes and what my tour guide says is the best poutine in the city. I dont' eat cheese, but my group said it was the best they had on the trip. Both are on Rue Rachel.

Ouzeri was an excellent greek restaurant on Saint Denis.

Cantinho De Lisboa was a good little Portuguese cafe. Soups, sandwiches, etc...

I'll try and get my food pics in here for you to see. But I was very impressed all in all. Montreal has the most restaurants per capita in North America, and only NYC has more restaurants. Every other door is a tiny little cafe or restaurant. It can be extremely overwhelming if you don't have an idea of what you want.

Along with poutine, Quebec is known for mussels and fries (pub food) and also maple syrup pie for dessert. I would implore anyone who visits Montreal to take the three hour VIA (their Amtrak) to Quebec City if you have time.

I could only put down about 4 bites. Holy crap was it sweet! Not bad, just sweet. Like bread pudding made with maple syrup.

I would love to but half my time there will be at a music festival so the remaining days are for exploring and eating the city.

Thanks for great responses.
