Will be driving through this area during lunchtime. Where should I stop to eat with the wife and children that isn’t far off of I85 or Hwy 280? TIA.

Any type of food you're looking for? Auburn will be very easy to get to and couple of good options.

I can't give specific recs, but Montgomery to Auburn is desolate. I can't imagine getting off and going on 280 is any better.

So, I agree, to go to Auburn.

Yep. Auburn and Opelika are both very easy to get to from 85. Some places I'd recommend in no particular order

Auburn - Simple low key joints:

1. Pannie George's - meat & 3. Very solid. Right off the interstate
2. Taco Mama - simple tacos and burritos. Kids will probably like it here. I eat at one in Bham a lot
3. Little Italy Pizzeria
4. The Hound - Little bit of everything American food wise. Little hard to find, off the street kind of tucked under a parking deck.
5. Original Mamma Goldberg's

2-4 are all right in the heart of downtown Auburn so you could stop in at Toomer'd Drug store for a lemonade or ice cream as well.

Auburn - Little nicer places
1. Acre - Probably my favorite restaurant in Auburn right now.
2. Amsterdam Cafe - really good Kobe burger.
3. The Depot - seafood mainly

Opelika/Midtown:

1. Irish bread Pub
2. Brick Oven Pizza Co.

You can get off at Midtown between Auburn and Opelike, it is right on the interstate. It will have pretty much your standard strip mall type places, chick fil a, zaxby's, Moe's, etc.

Something local and good. Will have 4 more hours to go afterwards so don’t wanna waste a huge amount of time.

Then, from the list above, Pannie George's will be the quickest. It is maybe 200 yards from the interstate.

Acre & The Hound are kind of the hot restaurants in Auburn at the moment. Both are very good.

None of the ones I listed though should take too long, all are pretty quick to get to from 85. Acre and Amsterdam probably take the longest as far as sitting down is concerned, but not unreasonable unless they are just slammed. The rest are pretty standard.

I stop at either Chucks Barbecue in Opelika, or one of many Chick Fil As

I've eaten at most of these places, but OP don't go here..

Original Mamma Goldberg's

I get that former and current Auburn students love it, but it is trash sandwiches.

I usually just stop at the Burger Fi in Tigertown when going through there, but my route has me getting off 85 at that exit already so it's easy.

Look I get it. Auburn folks don't get the appeal of Taco Casa in Tuscaloosa, and Alabama fans don't get the appeal of Momma Goldberg's.

I've never been to the original one though. Just the ones in Birmingham.

I love taco casa

Which ones in bham? Only one that is even remotely decent is the homewood one tbh. The rest cheat you on nachos and stuff big time.

Honestly, I completely understand people that don't like the steamed sandwich. It is definitely something you either like or don't. Flavor is solid though. If you haven't been in a while, they have actually added a ton to their menu. Not just steamed sandwiches anymore.

Ha, most of my Auburn friends I've tried introducing to Taco Casa hated it. I grew up in Tuscaloosa and grew up on Taco Casa.

I've been to the Homewood one once, and the one that used to be on 280 in Inverness a couple of times. That one closed, but there's one down in Lee Branch. Never been to that one though. Isn't there one in Trussville? I think I've been to that one. It's been a few years since I've been to one.

There was one on 280 in Bham growing up. Use to destroy that place. So good. It is kind of like the Little Italy differences between Auburn and Tuscaloosa. The Tuscaloosa one is pretty garbage. Auburn one is fantastic. The entire atmosphere of each is a giant 180.

Yea they just opened one in Lee Branch. For some reason, all the new ones don't give you near the same amount of nachos, and the sandwiches almost never have any dressing and/or mustard on them. It is weird.

It may just be that they use crack, but this stuff has me addicted. If I go too long, I have to get a fix at some point. Probably didn't help that I lived next door to one in college, so every drunk night walking home from the bars, might as well stop in for some nachos. Don't want to be rude.

I live down 280 and often weep silently when I drive by the old Taco Casa. The Homewood one is so inconvenient, but I'll still make the trek once every month or two.

I guess 40 years of eating it has made me immune to those effects.

If you're willing to go off the beaten path a bit near Columbus, the BBQ House in Fort Mitchell just outside Fort Benning is still one of the best BBQ joints I've ever been too. Used to tear that place up weekly when I was stationed at Fort Benning.

Address is 752 AL-165, Fort Mitchell, AL 36856.
