Cousin is in from Louisiana. He brought me some killer sausage from a little place in Redell. Naturally I made the Monday must of Red Beans, Rice, Cornbread and sausage. As we sit down to chow down I asked the wife to grab the red wine vinegar. He says I'm "killing" a great meal and says the family is going to excommunicate me because: "You know we don't do that shite". So the question:

Do you or don't you use vinegar as a condiment on your red beans?

I'll have to wait until he drags his lazy arse out of bed to ask him. However, if memory serves, there was only one little store in Redell and for the life of me I can't remember the name. I'll get back to you with it.

BTW got some garlic, jalapeno, and mixed pork and beef and all rocked.

Could it be Mel's?

I frequent Redell and Mamou, but have never been to Mel's. Always go to T-Boys for some boudin and everything else.

Might have to swing by when I'm there in a couple weeks.

Adding a dash of red wine vinegar to the beans at the table is no different than adding a dash of Crystal or Tabasco. IMO.

I've used balsamic here and there to kick up my red beans a bit, but I am not under the delusion that such a thing is normal.

I have no problem with it, just never heard of it. I love to add a big pile of jalapenos to mine.

So who is cleaning up the kitchen this AM? Never heard of vinegar as a condiment for beans, but some hot sauces are vinegary in nature.

There is a pickled pepper vinegar that people use as a condiment on rb&r. Can't think of the name though.

It's good, I've done it, and am not ashamed.

Didn't know it was a Louisiana product. It's on alot of tables. My powpow used it on his rbr all the time. I grew up with that flavor.

But I have used it on black eyed peas. May try it on red beans.

Have personally never used vinegar, but regularly use hot sauce..... (Isn't that a ingredient in hot sauce)

Tobasco has plenty vinegar. Others have it I'm sure just not as much.
