It’s actually not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I’d say after the 12 course tasting menu with wine pairings it’ll be somewhere in the $1k range.

It helps that tipping is considered rude.

Tips going to be bout zero.

They don’t believe in tipping in Italy. Its actually kind of insulting to them, especially at a restaurant like Osteria.

As I said earlier, from everything I’ve read, chef Massimo actually encourages it.

But I’m going to assess the situation once I’m there.

I would put your balls on the table. Show the chef who’s in control.

Tips are generally frowned upon at high end restaurants for tasting menus, even in the United States. For example, this is from the FAQ for Eleven Mad:
quote:

Do I need to leave gratuity when I dine? No, gratuity is included in the price of the menu. In fact, gratuities are neither expected nor accepted.

Yeah, that’s typically the case. We did a 12-course tasting menu about a month ago for our anniversary and gratuity was included.

Funny you use Eleven Madison as the example. They are the restaurant that jumped Osteria in 2017 to take #1 in the world, Osteria slid all the way down to #2.

Eleven Mad has been on my to do list for a while, but it’s really been on my mind ever since I saw it jump to #1. I currently don’t have a trip to NYC planned, but I’m seriously reconsidering that fact
