Looking to try something new at Omi

I’ve had all of the usual offerings — Chong Qing, Eggplant, Cumin stuff, etc — looking to try something new. Has anyone here ever had one of their hot pots, spicy oil fish, garlic bolt with Chinese bacon, or house ribs? Or any other specials that aren’t on the menu?

Spicy boiled fish is good. I used to like their mapo tofu but it's been hit or miss.

I definitely plan on trying that.
The ribs look legit, but I don't know of anyone who's had them.
I wish they served dan dan noodles

Their vinegar ribs (or pepper vinegar ribs) were really good last time I had them. Korean style thin cut across the bones.
Also I can't remember but their moo shoo dish (pork?) was good. Not traditional pancake style like typical. I liked it a lot.
Another I really liked was some type of egg/fungus dish. Sounds repulsive but they mean mushroom when they say fungus.

Are the pepper vinegar ribs the “house” ribs? They have house ribs, and sweet & sour ribs... want to make sure I’m ordering the right ones,

Just got back from there and it was terrible. Spicy oil fish was inedible and had to be sent back. Beef hot pot was also not good. I’ll eat just about anything but it was really bad. Moo Shu pork was ok, nothing special. Best thing was the garlic shrimp but it was a small portion for $15.95. I used to love this place when it opened but after this I won’t be going back.

You wanted to venture out from the solid, oft-ordered dishes, you came away disappointed, and now you'll never go back.
Seems like a legit reaction

The fish with the pickled mustard greens is amazing.

Sorry, but I'm just tired of the oft-ordered dishes. I was looking for something new because I honestly don't care for the cumin dishes or the eggplant. The only two things I've really liked are the Chong Qing (Nine Dragon Noodle House has a superior version) and the sweet n' sour dishes with the black vinegar. So actually, there's a lot more to it than you assumed.

I finally tried 9 dragon Noodle house. I’m a big fan of Sichuan style and seek it out when traveling. Enough to have a wide array of comparisons. Omi is still by far my favorite in the state. Nine dragon would be a #2 but it is no where near as good as Omi imo. The chicken with chilies seemed to derive all of its heat from thin sliced jalapeños. That’s fairly unusual for that dish.
They were out of string beans, so I couldn’t compare that. I got eggplant instead. It was well prepared but the sauce was almost exclusively soy and black vinegar. Meh
I got sweet and sour chicken for my boys. (They will eat the Chong quint and cumin pork at Omi, but the chicken with jalapeños was too hot for them). It was over cooked to the point of the meat being jerky.
That’s the difference to me. Even the typically Americanized dishes at Omi tend to be very well executed and unique.
Glad I finally tried it. It will be a rare Omi backup

SO hates omi after going twice. She just doesn't think it's good
9 dragon is our preferred place to go when we want Asian food. I love the Singapore chow mein fun and amazing chicken. We always order takeout though when we get it. I Want to eat there to try the ramen but it's always dead as shite in there.

Ever try the Vietnamese restaurants near Florida & Sherwood?

My wife and I eat at Omi A LOT. A couple other items that are good:
Spicy soy beef- hot, spicy, oily soup type dish with beef and tofu. Extremely good. Similar to a Korean version of kimchi jjigae.
Spicy soy fish is the same thing as above. Just has fish
String beans with meat is excellent and a go to for us
Steamed flounder is also legit.
I forget what it’s called by the spicy tofu plate is excellent as well. Kind of like the above spicy soy dishes but with less soup
I find the eggplant to be too “Americanized” in taste. It’s like your typical sweet and sour sauce mixture.
Our regular staples are the spicy soy beef, spicy cumin beef, and Chong Quing.

I love Omi, but I tend to agree on the cumin dishes. I’ll eat them, but I’m not a big cumin person in general so I don’t order it personally.
Agree with what’s been said about 9 Dragon in this thread. The one thing they do better than Omi is the hot and sour soup. Omi’s is good but somewhat bland like most other places. 9 Dragon’s version is very sour, which I like.

Don't try the intestines.

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I find 9DNH to be superior. Amazing Chicken, Dry Fried Spicy Beef, Singapore Chicken, Double-cooked pork, Stewed pork with salted vegetables, sauteed pig liver, crab with ginger and scallions, Mongolian beef... everything I've had has been great. I also like their hot and sour soup much more than Omi's version. I've never had a bad meal there.
As far as the cumin dishes at Omi, they're way too salty and overpowering for my palate. I'm not big on eggplant, so that dish does nothing for me. I went there a couple times when it first opened and thought it was great -- took my parents there and it was terrible. I was embarrassed. Even the Chong Qing was bad. And I don't know how anyone can eat that oil fish; it tasted like pure chili oil with no flavor at all.

I've had the intestines with XO sauce at Little Chinatown in Kenner, and it was very good.
