Crescent Pie and Sausage Co in Midcity.
Tan Dihn-on Westbank.
A Mano in Warehouse Dist.
Maya's in Lower Garden
Canal Latino in Midcity
Lola in Midcity

Nearly got it first, Neauxla.

Great spot, I am long overdue there. It really is a hidden gem!!

Best Mojitos in town.

I saw that after I posted. But to my credit, it was my lone suggestion.

My wife works in Gretna and those places have quick takeout.

Kudos!

I think Maya's is the only "good" (don't want to start a fight) latin restaurant in town.

I would have to think of the next best place.

Welcome to the world of living to eat instead of eating to live.

Sarita's or La Macarena? although those are a little more ambiguous as far as style of food is concerned.

ETA: and I love Maya's food .. but frick drinking there. their cocktails are very overpriced. $10 for a single well gin & tonic? give me a break. and given their focus on south american and spanish wine, you would think they'd have a slightly better more fairly priced selection.

Does Baru count? I think Baru is pretty good (although its a Caribbean place).

Mais Arepas? That place is pretty good.

Baru slings some solid food. Need to get back over there soon.

By the way:

If you love Mojitos, Dominique's is doing Mojito Mondays. Every Monday their mixologist will have $5 mojitos and they will have several made with the herbs from their garden (like Black Lavender).

With a spouse in Gretna, you should definitely put Tan Dinh, Banana Blossom, and Pho Tau Bay on your list, along with the Hi-Do bakery.

Best value for the buck takeout in Gretna is probably Pho Bang. The bun thit nuong (chargrilled, thin cut boneless pork loin salad bowl) is a portion large enough to share, and it costs all of about $7.

Judging by your list and places you've never heard of, you're in for a big treat! You could easily never eat at the same place twice for years and years.

Consider not discounting places you've heard of, but never been to because you will be missing out on some very good food if you do.

Have fun and keep asking about places here. You'll get a lot of help and order suggestions and, most importantly, report back on the food and the experience!

Chicken likes people to rate and write reviews on the dining guide, also. The guide might be helpful to you as well.

Yeah, judging from his list, he should make it a habit of breaking out of his bubble and trying a new place every weekend.

Those are both solid spots.

I still think they are at least a level below Maya's but they are good.

About Dominque's, that drink special sounds pretty good. Did you eat there, how was it? I have heard very little about the place since it opened.

I thought about trying it this Sat. but went to Root instead.

I have not eaten there yet, but a friend went and said it was great, definitely lives up to what he has done in the past.

And how could I forget Root on my list?

OP, you should definitely try ROOT, although it might be a little...advanced for you.

Went this past week, wasn't overly impressed. I don't think they have a particularly sustainable business practice going on, either.

Its a good place. It is not on the level of Cochon Butcher, but it is good. People do greatly overrate it though.

I know the owner, although very tangentially through a friend. They seem to be doing pretty well, from what I gather. There's talk of a 2nd location, actually.

I was wondering because of how expansive its scope is for a sandwich place..I mean, they gave me 4 different menus when I went. Not to mention there were an inordinate amount of employees working in the kitchen and the place was pretty empty, as well. I'll try it again for certain, but I'm hoping my next sandwich is more satisfying.
