Knife buying help

Wife and I were going to look for me a new knife as a fathers day gift, and I had a couple of questions. Out of the these three, which ones would you recommend in order? Bob Kramer, Miyabi, Wusthof. My other questions is here in Baton Rouge they have a really nice collection in Perkins Rowe at Sur La Table, would I be better feeling the knives out there and buying somewhere else for a better deal? Or are they pretty competitive with pricing? I also received an email they were running fathers day deals, but I'm sure a lot of places are. Thanks for any help.

I'm sure some of the chefs here will give you good recommendations on knives, I am not a chef but this advice has served me well: Take whatever you have budgeted for a "nice set of knives" and spend it on one very nice Chef's knife. You can add the boning knife, paring knife, serrated knife later and get by on cheaper versions for now.
Edit: Also, be sure you have a way to store your new knife properly. Nothing ruins the edge a knife like just throwing it randomly in a drawer.
Edit2: I've had a set of Henckels for about 15 years now and they have held up very well.

They're a good weight and balance and I like the rubberized grip. They've never been in the dishwasher and have always cut on a cutting board. They're on the lower end of chef knives now, but they are serviceable.

Buy a Victorinox chef's knife, a pull-through knife sharpener, and a whetstone on Amazon. Use the difference to go out and buy some booze, cigars, and a couple nice slabs of cow.

I have a nice set and I also have a couple nice 5-10 year knives. I'm looking at buying one very nice forever chef knife. That's why I am looking at the top of line brands.

Is this one considered top of the line compared to Bob Kramer and Miyabi? I dont mind spending $200-$300, if it's a knife I'll have for a long time. As far as sharpening, I'll probably have it sharpened professionally a couple times a year.

It might be worth a drive to Coutelier in New Orleans. If you want to stick to store available in BR I would go Shun or Global.

Are you committed to those three only?
Out of those, go with the carbon Kramer 10". The Kramer 8" has hardly any flat area.
FYI - it's 20% off at cutleryandmore.com right now once you put it in the cart. No tax, free shipping, plus a $25 gift card.

Just buy a nice victorinox. Swiss made perfection

It's a great value, but isn't a great knife.

I've never had a problem with mine for the most part and I think it's the best as far as stainless knives go. But mine are from the actual factory in Switzerland. Not the outlets in America
Now if you want to get real in the kitchen and start discussing carbon steel then we can do that.

I have a victorinox bread knife, paring knife, and boning knife.
They are durable, and hold a decent edge.
That said, they don't feel great in your hand, don't look great, etc.
But they probably are the best all around value there is for what they are. No argument there.

I agree 100% about the plastic handles. I have a fibrox 8" chef's knife that's basically unusable due to its feel and balance.
But I also have a rose-wood handled Victorinox Santoku that is amazing. It fits my hand perfectly and is balanced very well.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about the fibrox victorinox chefs knives!

All good.
Got one of those as a wedding present and I hate it.
But the rosewood handled one's are aces

Not committed at all, open to all suggestions. I want a good value but dont mind spending $150-$300, if its a great knife.
