Kleinpeter has been buying milk on the open market for years: it is not strictly a locally farmed product. Some portion of the milk is local, but on any given day, it's coming from who-knows-where.
A very small portion if any at all is bought on the open market and when it is it comes from the two you listed. I don't think any has been bought outside of there farm since the mid 2000's.

There's a threshold that the industry has to stay under. Almost all brands are barely under that, except for Kleinpeter, who is significantly lower.

Lactating dairy cows often suffer from mastitis...infection = puss. Thus milk frequently has antibiotic residue in addition to the puss.

Maybe it's just me, but I find that many brands of milk have an off-taste during this time of year. I'm no dairy farmer, but I wonder if it has to do the cows eating certain types of weeds or grasses that come up in the early spring.

YES.
Had a half gallon spoil way early.
Replaced it with a full gallon that was entirely bad.
Bought another half gallon that was back to good.

Don't know about the milk but a family member bought their egg nog in December and it made everyone very sick.
We went to the grocery store to alert them to possibly other bottles might be bad too and they said several people had gotten sick from Kleinpeter egg nog that day.

I've noticed it..... I started a thread on it a few months ago.... I don't bother to waste my money any more... Loved their mild but lately it's just been bad.

This is the answer. If the cows eat the wrong weeds, the milk will taste bitter.

Can't believe this has gone on for several messages and no one has pointed out that there is one "s" in "pus".

If you want strictly local, you've got to buy Smith's (which is packaged by Kleinpeter, but produced by Smith's grass fed cows)
Is Smith's available anywhere or just some stores?

arse backwards hoss. Most of Kleinpeters milk comes from other farms far outside of this state. I believe 30% percent was the number I heard from their cows however that doesn't make a shite because it's mixed in with the rest.
On another note mentioned earlier about someone being bought out it was for sure not Borden or Kleinpeter.

The last several gallons and half gallons I've bought have all started to smell pretty iffy a few days before expiration. I expect dairy products made in the city I live in to actually hold up to the date on the carton. Maybe they're having some temp issues during transport??
ETA: the Felicianas Best dairy products I've bought at the farmers market have been great.

FWIW, I've been buying Kleinpeter's lately because my usual Albertson's 2% has no shelf life to speak of. Kleinpeter's has been lasting longer. It's disappointing to learn they're outsourcing their milk.

Yes....I quit buying it because of this. I started buying the Horizon Organic and love it.

Now here is a genius who has no clue what the frick he is talking about.

How is the Sure Fresh milk? It's sold around here in all the AG stores.

I've noticed this too. Milk goes sour well before the date on the carton. I figure it was cuz it was just sitting in my fridge for a week undisturbed (not shaken with normal use), then when I use it on the weekend--sour.

Used to buy Horizon, but they wanna make money(not eliminate GMOs)..
Now buy Organic Valley 'Cream On Top', and Smith's Chocolate..or just use Ghirardelli cocoa powders.
