I know Whole Foods sells "Italian Roast Beef", and I think the stuff is $18 a pound.
For a sammich, I might have to pass on that one.

No where. I think this a truly Chicago type of sandwich. Chicago is certainly a top 5 City for food. High end down to the gutter.

yeah, and it's not just an ingredient much like a philly cheesesteak, it's a whole process.
It's a Chicago area thing primarily. They are also big in north jersey, but the giardiniera is overlooked and instead fresh mozzarella is often added. There is only 1 place i know of in the entire metro L.A. area (Portillo's) that does it true chicago style. I really doubt there are any good ones NOLA or BR.

My mom feels that way too - I only went once as a kid, so I can't even remember what in the world I had.

And it still isn't the same. Elbowing up to fat-arse Chicagoan's has to add to the experience.

This is why I loved the Joe's Special at the old Library Restaurant on Chimes. It was a roast beef muffaletta with the olive mix and swiss cheese. Sour and salty olive mix being similar to the Giardiniera.
Old fart. Remember the steak sandwich at Blimpie Base, which is now Inga's?

Guilty to being an Old Fart. Blimpie's was always a favorite of mine, once I learned how good a Blimpie Best tasted with oil & vinegar.

Tuesday or Thursday steins does an excellent Italian beef. Going to Chicago in September. Can't say how it compares until. Everything steins does compares well to the big cities it seeks to emmulate though.

Sadly though it lost a little something when The Berghoff closed. That was a sad day.

with giardiniera and the good italian bread?
i thought i saw a sign in there at one time for a philly cheesesteak special on some day of the week, but never noticed an italian beef one.

Headslash, not sure where to find one in BR.
Maybe Pocorello's? Anthony's?
Anthony's doesn't have one.

I think it would be like trying to find a great shrimp poboy in Chicago, unfortunately.
That being said, there are some good recipes for the beef itself that look pretty authentic, but as tigre said, the secret is the bread.
You can always order it...and this is not that bad of a deal ($9/sandwich), considering it is shipped:
Portillo's Beef

It's good but not $18 a pound good. Try Fresh Market, they're a little bit more reasonable.

You can get a beef @ Chicago Al's in Baton Rouge (hot dog stand on Oneil). Definitely not on the level you get in the Windy City but gets me my fix. Chicago Al's has sauted onions & bell peppers which is not traditional & their giardinera is kinda mild but still the closest thing to authentic you'll find around here. As mentioned above, if you like sausage you gotta try a combo beef.
I'll take a combo beef dipped w/ hot giard over a steak dinner anytime.

Where at in BR?
Best I have found is at Chicago Al's hot dog stand on O'Neal. They will dip it.
Doe's does an Italian Roast Beef at lunch
those are the only ones I know of. It would be cool if a place like Anthony's made one
