If this is for someone that knows bourbon and you don't have any connections, go with something in the EH Taylor line or go to a store that has done a barrel pick of Four Roses single barrel.

I'd stay away from Garrison Brothers. Overpriced and harsh.
If OP is willing to spend the $2,000 it takes to get a PVW, I'd suggest going to one of the better stores and buying several other brands and making a basket. Maybe a whiskey world tour type of thing: Irish, Scot, Japan, Canada, and USA. You could spend $500 and 'wow' the shite out of someone.

This is one of those situations where no matter how good it is, how could it possibly be 50 times better than a $40 bottle of bourbon?
To put it another way, I'd imagine that there are significantly diminishing returns after $200 for a bottle of bourbon, much less $2000.

But, do you know if they know a lot about bourbon? The reason I ask is because people will be impressed by different things based on their level of aficionado. I'm not trying to sound snobby or anything, but some people will be more impressed by a bottle of Crown XR than they will a bottle of Weller Antique, just because they have never heard of the Weller.

I don't know how much he knows. I've bought him Crown Black label, Crown Reserve, Four Roses and a few others. Trying to step it up

It is the textbook definition of overrated.
Overrated does not mean it's not good or fantastic. It's high quality. However it's a far cry from the initial Stitzel-Weller juice -- the very juice that was casked from the original stuff. The juice you get now is distilled by Buffalo Trace in Frankfort and is nowhere near as good as what made Pappy infamous.
If you're looking for something high quality and still stay under $150, look for any of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC) releases. Also look for Old Forester Birthday Bourbon. Those are available right about now, and go fast. However a great buy that is absolutely impressive for the price and more readily available as of now, is the Old Forester 1897 Bonded-in-Bond. Don't pay more than $70 for it. But it's wonderful and can't wait for their 1923 release.

Find an empty bottle of PVW 15 year old (20 and 23 would work for most people too). Buy a $25 bottle of Old Weller Antique 107 proof and a $25 of W.L. Weller 12 year old 90 proof. Mix at a 60/40 split between the 107 and 90, respectively. Figure out how to reseal the bottle. drink the rest of the two separate bottles. You just impressed the shite out of some unsuspecting friend for $25 worth of bourbon.

OP asks if van winkle is too hard to find. You recommend he buy something just as difficult to find as a great alternative. lol.

Can you guys actually find this in LA? I swear Alabama has gotten ridiculous. Regular Buffalo Trace is starting to become a rarity.

If you've bought him these and he's been impressed, he has no idea what pappy is and you're wasting money. Buy him an eagle rare and be done.
If you've given him these and he drinks pappy, he's laughed at you as soon as you walked out the door and poured them out

It's still around in Houston, but I will say it's mostly WSR these days.

Depends where you are. And no, I still see Handy on shelves for months on end. Oh and look! I listed one that's readily available (OF1897), douche.

Exactly.
Friend of mine went out of his way and out of his money to get a bottle. I asked him if it was worth it, and he said yes because it was worth having the empty bottle and the story to tell. Not a peep about the quality of the flavor.
Waste of money IYAM.

Where and for how much? I still see PVW 23 on shelves too, for the small fee of $3500.
If you can find a Handy for retail, I'll give you $20 just to point me in that direction.

It's a gift for a big client. If that means an extra few grand a year in business, I say it's not a waste of money to get him something memorable.

If you've got a spare email address you don't mind giving out, list ithere, and I'll tell you how I get limited release/allocated whiskeys pretty darn easily.

I'll agree with you about overpriced, but I enjoy it, and it has a bit of a unique factor to it. Plus broke is talking about Pappy, so clearly overpriced isn't one of his concerns.

if you are getting Weller at that price, buy a bunch. Weller production and distribution will be limited next year and pricing is expected to double, at least.
The poor man's pappy is a very similar mash profile. Let it sit for at least a couple weeks and you will have a very nice bourbon on your hands. I would also recommend experimenting with the ratio to create some different profiles.
