Raja's Curry & Grill in LC on Ryan is pretty good. There is also Royal Tandoor on Common St, tho not as much of a "sit-down" type of place. I get the butter chicken at Raja's and it is really good.

Laf: Masala Indian Kitchen, Royal Curry, Destination India … all solid places with great food options. IMO, a first time dining experience at an Indian Restaurant is similar to eating sushi for the first time. It greatly helps to eat with someone who knows what foods to order as their are lots of options. Hard to go wrong with a chicken tikka masala or a butter chicken. Tandoori chicken is good and garlic butter naan is essential for the vegetable dishes. I like Saag Paneer which is a spinach and cheese creamy style dish. My nephew has been a waiter at Masala for several years and can make food recommendations if y’all dine there

You need to add Priya's (Indian Food Made With Love) next door to Mae Sone Noodle House behind the Baskin Robbins on Johnston St across from Doug Ashy. Tiny restaurant. 4 tables. Legit good and fresh. No alcohol. BYOB without corkage fee.

I had the weekend buffet at Destination India a couple of weeks ago and it was fantastic.

Masala had a lunch buffet which stopped around 2015 ??? Food has always been good. I definitely need to try Priya. I grew up in NO as one of my best friends parents opened the first Indian restaurants in the city. They still have Nirvana on Magazine. After drinking all night, we’d go to Taj Mahal in Metairie or Keswani’s in Uptown Square and eat like kings. Love me some Indian groceries

Yes. Entrees were in the mid-teens, plus app of naan, total bill was low $40s plus tax.
We chuckled when I asked my wife when was the last time we ate out for less than $50.....couldn't remember.
But no alcohol here, no $10-12 old fashions, no cosmos. We brought our own wine in.
This restaurant is good, authentic as hell, deserves more business, and hopefully can make the jump to a larger space to serve more people.

They also go out to the Farmers Market every Saturday morning, very friendly and good samosas.

had trial in Abbeville this a.m. and on the way back stopped at Priya for lunch. Outstanding and very affordable per today's crazy dining prices. For an app, I had the chicken samosa (2 for $5) which included 2 different types of dipping sauce. The entree included a bowl of lentil soup that was free .... kinda tasted like a spicy beef stew yet without the meat. I ordered the chicken tikka masala ($12) that was served in a bowl large enough for 2 medium size servings. The dish also included a cabbage type salad with a sweet chili dressing. I had a Mango tea that was $2. Also ordered the garlic butter naan for $2. There was enough food as I needed a to go box for the leftovers. I could have eaten it all but would have been miserable back at the office. Bill was $21 as I left a $4 tip. 2 people could have eaten that meal considering it was split into medium size portions. Will definitely go back with family & friends

Food looks like home cooking.

Excellent. That's basically the meal we had.
And yes, it pretty much IS home cooking. They take your order to the kitchen (15-20 feet away from the dining area of 4 tables) and she starts cooking it up. No defrosting batches of previously cooked frozen food.
It's the real deal.

The newer Destination India has dethroned all other Indian restaurants for me. Everything there has been spot on, and I really love the curried goat.

If you want to try something different, try the stuffed eggplant at Priya's. It is one my favorite vegetarian dish my mom used to make.
You fry the eggplant, stuff with spices and recook in the gravy.
Wish someone also had the eggplant pakora fry curry, You cook the pakora, smash it and stir fry it with eggplant, peanut.
