That will stand out in a blind tasting

Not really.

If they aren't big wine people, it'll taste like any bottle they've had because the average consumer goes towards the jammy style, big cabs and red blends that are slightly sweet. Orin Swift, as mentioned earlier, fits this bill.

If they are big wine people, they most likely prefer old world styles and will dismiss those types. Everything I listed fits this bill. Ridge is the only new world I listed and it was one of 3 US producers (with heitz and stag's leap wine cellars) to score highly in the original judgement of Paris and actually won the 2006 "rejudgement" of Paris, both with their 1971 Monte Bello.

This is still a fantastic bottle if you can get your hands on it.

Montebello is actually a good call. The last 20 vintages or so have generally been easier drinkers young than those made in the 60s-80s, and it's a wine that will likely please newbies and those who like mature, or lower alcohol wines.

Argiano Solengo 2014 about $80

Just as good:

2015 Borgo Scopeto Borgonro about $20

Both are bold and fruity like California cabs but very mild on the tannins. Crowd pleasers.

Winking owl cab or merlot from Aldi. 3 bucks but good enough to surprise people at a wine tasting and spark conversation. .

Educated Guess Cab $25ish, or it’s big brother Hypotheses $35ish
