So i went to the local international market to get a few spices to make pho at home. They had the star anise but that was it (kinda disappointed). But what they did have was this.
I came home and tried it and it was delicious! The jar says one spoonful of paste to three cups of water. A few reviews i read said that it still needed to be souped up a little so I did. I boiled three cups of water and in that water i put 3 star anise, a cinnamon stick, a small grip of cilantro, a tbsp of fennel, and a few slices of raw jalapeno. After i simmered that for about 20 minutes, I strained it all out and added the pho paste.
OMG. It was delicious. Just as good if not better than what I have ever had in any restaurant.
Just fyi for any of you that may want it at home.

I wonder what the sodium content is on that.

Hmm, looks like whatever/whomever ole "Por Kwan" is, they have it going on when it comes to quick Asain sauces:
Instant Tom Yum, Pad Thai, Pho, etc...

Going to look for that at Bangkok when I go to restock my massaman supply.

Oh Nozzzz! I was told you can't make Pho broth unless you boil the bones for 18 hours!

I'd be willing to bet a lot of places use that.

Thought so. That's the only Asian market, right?

As far as I know. Kroger ended up having a lot of the other spices I was looking for but Bangkok is the only Asian market in cenla.

I was talking to the caucasian server at Pho Saigon in Covington next to Massey's on 190 a few months back and I was letting her know how much I enjoy their Bun Bo Hue (best on the Northshore without a doubt) and she told me that most of the other places on the Northshore use this stuff and the reason why theirs is so good is because the Vietnamese couple who owns the place do it the right way - low and slow.
P.S. - there is a Pho Saigon in Mandeville that is not owned by the same people. Go to the one off 190.

So when you make the soup, you're serving it over noodles, right? Are you adding meat or anything to it, or just the strained broth with instant pho?

I put it over rice noodles tonight with no meat. Next time Ill make some meatballs or drop some shrimp or beef in it.
