That's the biggest issue with those things. They live outside and it's so humid here.

For the rust, warm water and vinegar solution. For the grime, lye, or lye based oven cleaner. Use gloves and eye protection. I even use a wire wheel on my cordless drill. Bypass the eco friendly crap. This ain't California.

This is why I got a stainless steel insert for my bullseye. 0 issues, no rust, no treating it.

It’s a pain in the arse. I eventually had to have mine blasted. Spent hours on it. Never was happy with it. Just went ahead and bought another new one.

I've done it a few times. First, clean it well to make sure it really needs a re-season. A ten minute cleaning might help you skip a 90 minute re-season. Get it hot, spray a little water on it, scrape. A lot of crud will come off. Unless you have a rusty surface (not brown crud), you dont need a re-season in my book.

A 36" might take an hour to wire wheel. Use the one pictured below, its the easiest. Once you get it good and clean, wipe it down a few times, no need to get one of those wires stuck in the food. Maybe run a small vaccuum. Then get it good and hot, and dribble just a bit of high-temp plant-based oil on it. THINK THINK. Use a tongs with paper towel to smear it around, a very thin layer. When the smoking stops, do it again 4-8 times.

Be patient with the oil part. Crack open a beverage and read the news or something.



Using this bit is the easiest.
