How much of a difference does freshly ground espresso beans make?

I’m about to get an espresso machine and I’m not sure if I want to splurge on one with a built-in grinder or get a stand-alone grinder. Anyone have any thoughts?

I like the Breville bambino. But I’m also considering getting their Barista because it has the built in grinder.

Built ins are a pita to clean, so we went with a stand alone.

Definitely worth having fresh ground beans though. Pretty much no comparison with pre ground imo

I would go with a stand alone masticating grinder.

All beans are espresso beans if ground fine enough & brewed correctly.

Fresh ground is a must imo. Fresh roasted is nearly as important. Espresso will deliver the best flavor in the beans but I find it translates nasty stale bean flavor way quicker. A few weeks from roast date and you notice.

Get cafe bustello and a French press. Ditch the idea of a machine.

this is the correct answer.

and the grinder is damn near more important than the espresso machine. the lowest i'd go on an entry level grinder for espresso is a Baratza 270

The grinder is typically the limiting factor. You won’t be able to make anything good on that machine without a good grinder. You can get some really good hand grinders for a fraction of the price of the electric grinders. Look at Kinu.
