How many pounds of shrimp does 10 pounds of head on shrimp yield?

A place near my house has head on shrimp for two dollars a pound. When I called and asked about size he said they were head on and a mix of medium and large. How many pounds of headless shrimp should I expect to end up with? TIA

8-9 i would think. shrimp heads don't weigh much...

Google says this
quote:
Shrimp yield: When buying heads-on shrimp remember that removing the heads will decrease total weight by 35%. When the shell is removed weight decreases by another 15%. For example, 100 pounds of heads-on shrimp will result in 65 pounds of heads-off shrimp. When shells are removed 50 pounds of shrimp flesh is the result.

save the heads for fried seaspiders

Roughly 50% peeled. So with 10#s of whole shrimp you would come out with 5 pounds of meat for white and brown shrimp. You have more loss with sea-bobs. You would yield about 4 1/4 pounds peeled per 10 pounds whole.

If he doesn't give you count\pound stay away. medium and large mean nothing.

They are 2 bucks a pound bro. It is a good deal even if they are small.
Besides here in Savannah for some reason no one gives counts. They just label them small, medium, large and jumbo.

65-75% for headless (10lbs whole to 7lbs headless)
55-65% for peeled meat (10lbs whole to 6lbs peeled)
55-65% for peeled meat (10lbs whole to 6lbs peeled)

Not a bad deal. I bought 250 lbs this week of 26-30s for $2 a pound straight off the boat. 50 for me, the rest for others. I had 27.5 pounds of headless shrimp when me and the wife put them away.

I always pass by and think "damn that's a sketchy arse neighborhood"

It is..... On the other hand there's some good fellas that live there. I worked with many of them.

I always work on the premise of 60/40. 60% head and 40% meat and shell. Is that wrong?

It's an incredible deal here. Head on usually go for about 8 bucks.
