But of course they DID NOT tell your this until after you took a piss.

isn't it a law that restrooms must be provided to the public in a restaurant? thought it was a DHH issue.

Did anyone find out if water must be provided to customers, by law?

I think that is what bothers me about the opposing attitudes. They expect water (a drink) to be provided free, but no other drink items should be. They justify it by saying that it doesn't cost much to provide the water.

I am not for hiding the price of water then charging it, I think that is wrong for any item. I am just trying to figure out how water transcends other drinks.

One thing that I have noticed a lot in the last year is that you have to ask for tap water an awful lot - it's kind of a subtle way to ensure a soft drink being ordered at the minimum.

The very high end places will automatically bring tap water to you, but other than that, the landscape seems to have changed a bit.

I thought it was clever. really scary thing is that we have half a dozen people with and opposing view on cost of water for a problem that no one can ensure is happening.

So is this a business expense or isnt it?

1.6 gallons used for free in bathroom Versus 16oz used to drink? What is the difference?

until I am alerted otherwise, the law. as I stated before, I believe they are required to provide a restroom for customers but they are not required to provide free water.

You just reminded me of something - Rocky & Carlo's in Chalmette does not serve tap water at all.

You're forced to buy a bottle.

Their food wasn't all that great anyway.

YOU are the one that keeps making the point that its not fair to everyone in the restaurant that orders soft drinks to subsidize the person that orders water instead.

Yet Im paying for you to take a piss and use 25x more water.

As I stated before it varies by location.. NYC does have a law as does Arizona. You should try google. You can just call your local health board and ask.

so, you are just going to keep asking the same question in different ways?

I would assume they bank on everyone using the bathroom at least once while at their establishment, unless they serve water they don't assume everyone will have a glass.

the bathroom is a service that must be provided

that is how I found the info about France, illegal to charge for water unless it comes in a clean glass or with ice.

So you are saying that its ok for me to use 25 cups of water (assuming I flush once) but its perfectly ok to charge me two dollars (without telling me) for 1 extra cup of water (because thats an unaccounted for business expense)

thats rich...

Because of the current pricing. If a single Mexican restaurant stopped giving out the "free" chips and salsa people would complain. If most Mexican restaurants stopped giving it away, people would adjust. We keep focusing on free but it's really about an item being overpriced. The freeness just makes us hypersensitive to the price point. If it was standard practice to charge $.50 for water most people wouldn't complain much when it went to $.75, but going from $0 to $.25 is psychologically a much bigger price hike even though it's the same amount.

I think that has a lot to do with it. There is no doubt that the glass of water has always been passed on to the customer in some way, people just have the problem when they see it show up on the bill.
