That poor beer is in the low low low 60's though at my house right now. I need a heater for it instead of a refrigerator. Never had this problem before now.

I installed a heater for my fermentation fridge over the weekend. So my chest freezer outside is chilling at 65 degrees right now.

There you go. I don't know what I'm going to do considering I'm away for the weekend and don't want to run the heat the whole time.

I don't have any portable heaters or electric blankets or anything like that.

Will a standard one plug temp controller work the same way for heat as it will cooling or do you have to "switch" it to heat?

How did you do this? I want to do this with my chest freezer, i just don't understand how it would work. Does the heater and the freezer run simultaneously to keep the temp at 65? The only way i can think of maintaining a stable temp is the aquarium heater in a swamp cooler method.

I built one of these Aquarium Temp Controller

I then bought

and essentially this but with a cage rather than the black shade

Hung that beast from the lid and it has worked wonders.

So it cycles either the freezer or the heater depending on the temp.

Does the heater ever cut off? Or is it adjustable to a set temp?

It functions the same way that a single stage temp controller does. When the fridge drops 3 degrees below what I have it set, the heater comes one. Once it brings it back up to temp the heater shuts off. If it needs to cool down it will turn the freezer on.

But that's because you have a dual stage temp controller correct?

There's usually a setting. I know on my analog one I have to take the back off and flip a switch. On my digital there is a up/down setting to tell it which way to go with the temp.

Yes, but as bottomland mentioned it may be possible to switch the normal one to heat.

I have a digital one on my chamber. What's the cheapest/easiest way to heat up a carboy? Electric Blanket?

I'd guess maybe a bucket of water and an aquarium heater, but I don't really know.

OK, I might just not worry about it for now and will tend to it later when it warms back up.

The beer is for Iron Brewer and it's an IPA so we have a lot of time between now and then. Plan to dry hop/fruit it the first of February and keg it the 7th.

I have zero experience heating fermentation chambers, but I'd imagine the aquarium heater and bucket/cooler of water will give you the most accurate and consistent temperature. The heat exchange between the water and wort should keep things pretty steady, or at least steadier than pulses of heat from a blanket or lamp.

I'm going to try that next. I've been using a heating pad and have been fighting to keep things near 70 and have had some drastic nose dives during the night. One morning the pad cut itself off and my poor beer was struggling along at 59!!

Hey rds, do you use a false bottom in your kettle when using it as a mash tun, to keep the bag off the bottom and off the heat?

Yes, it is a big steamer pot, 7.5 gallons, that is designed for steaming lobsters and what not. I got it from Target for like $35?

If you already have a pot, you can get something like this.

I am still planning on coming down that way the 1st weekend of February. We can swap some homebrew and I can get that bag to you then.

I will hunt down a steamer rack that will fit my pot

Sounds good for February (I'm assuming the weekend of the 2/1 & 2/2). I will probably be in Trinity, about 20 miles from Huntsville, at my lease. No problem heading down to the park from there.

Just ran my first grain through my new Monster Mill. I was worried if my cordless drill could get through it, but it ended up taking a little less than a full battery to get through 12.5 lbs of grain. Crush looked pretty good, too. Hopefully tomorrow I brew. Got a funky farmhouse planned with some yeast harvested from a JK Boxer's Revenge mixed with some Wyeast Ardennes and B. claussenii. I blended the old cultures last night to step them up and it tastes fantastic. Here's to hoping it comes out alright.

6 lbs Pils
5 lbs Vienna
1 lb Rye
0.5 lb Amber
0.75 oz. aged Crystal hops at 60
Spice additions of chamomile, hibiscus, and satsuma peel.

I'll trade you a Rye Pear Saison and a 100% Brett Baltic Porter for one those

I now have 3 JKs that I need to drink so that I can add the dregs to my barrel. I'm also getting some Cantillon to add to the mix.
