The wife has requested that I brew something like blue moon for her tennis team ... She's never requested me brew something so it looks like I'll be brewing that next.

I found a post on HBT where a former SandLot brewer gave the exact recipe for the 'Belly Slide Belgian White', the original blue moon. I figure that's as good a place to start with a recipe as any.

Original:
OG: 1.054
Mash: 151F
Grain: 50% 2Row, 40% Wheat, 10% flaked oats
Hops: 17 IBUs Hallertauer Mittelfrueh
Yeast: US05
Spices: 1.25 tsp corriander, .33 tsp dried valencia orange peel

I'm thinking of leaving the grain bill alone, switching up the hops and spices a bit, do a short boil 10G batch, and turning half into something I'll drink.

Modified:
OG: 1.054
Mash: 151F
Grain: 50% 2Row, 40% Wheat, 10% flaked oats
Hops: 15 IBUs mandarina bavaria, 1 oz mandarina bavaria in WP.
Spices: .5 oz corriander, 3 oz freash orange zest
Yeast: 5G US05 / 5G Yeast Bay Amalgamation

Would love some sour character in my 5G, but lacto would take forever due to IBU inhabition and the mash temp isn't ideal pedio. maybe oxygenate the shite out of it and try to get brett to produce some acid??

Anyway if all goes well, she'll get her 5G of blue moonish beer and I'll take my 5G and dry hop the shite out of it with Citra or Amarillo or something of that nature.

I was going to say just make a gose or something for yourself out of it too until I got down to that part.
Good thinking.

hmmm...

I could just bring the kettle up to 180f to pasteurize and then run half off with 0 IBUs before adding the hops.

Then lacto would have no problems at all.

Yep. There you go.

That's exactly what I'd do.

Anybody else brewing this weekend? I'm doing another double brew day either this evening or Saturday morning, depending on weather and kid stuff.

Both will be for Brew at the Zoo in 3 weeks. First is Space Monkey pale ale, using Comet and Galaxy hops. Second is Macaw Hazelnut Brown. Both should be easy and finish up pretty quickly. I could have squeezed in some bigger beers, but with the event 3 weeks away, figured I'd go with some easy drinkers that I won't have to stress about being ready in time.

We're brewing some easy drinking beers for some family functions and corporate events coming up soon.

10 gallons of pale ale hopped with Jarrylo and Azacca.

Plan to do it tonight as long as work isn't crazy today and I can go get 15g of RO water and Ice.

I wish. I have a couple beers I want to get done but nowhere to really put them yet. I should probably get started on one of them though since I will ferment it with dregs and it may take a while to get to where I want it to be.

My brew last Wednesday turned into a circus. What was supposed to be a quiet day of brewing turned into a cluster frick about 30 minutes into the mash.

The highlight of which was accidentally throwing in my flameout hops at 60 mins and having to recalcuate my IBUs and change boil time on the fly.

first pour of this beer....

Rather nice easy drinking IPA/APA. It isn't exactly what I was aiming for, but considering how brew day went down I'll take it.

This keg will probably end up at brew at the zoo..

my direct fire mash tun drove me crazy like that...

Was even worse in the winter when I would mash in, get my temps right, only to have them drop 5-10 degrees every 30 minutes.

I have been using a smaller direct fire and had it figured out. This bigger one heated up (brought the mash temp up) way faster for some reason.

I keep telling my wife I need an indoor brewery.

You batch sparging or fly sparging Zappas?

One of the fabricators has a stainless insulated mash tun nowadays.

Didn't get to brew until today.

This is 23.5 lbs grain and 7.5 gallons of water in a 10 gallon igloo.
