how do you use them? do you just mash with the grains? I've heard it's a good idea to soak them first.
yep, I just throw a scoop full of them into grain bucket after I crush my grains. I've forgotten and added straight to the mash too.
They will soak up a little of your mash water, but in my experience it's not enough to make a difference

I just throw them in with the grains. I bought a pound of them to begin with and use a handful at a time.
Can tell a difference in the particles that come through after recirculating.

As percentage of your grain bill, about how much to use? My grain bill is about 14 lbs. 5% would that do? (1/2 lb.)

I never really weigh the hulls. I just add scoop or two from an old Raising Cains cup I have lying around.

Do i need to get the hulls from a brew store, or is this something i can find around town?

I used to buy them through a homebrew shop, but about three months ago I bought a half a bail of them from someone who was moving.
If you have a 5G bucket I can hook you up with some. When are you planning on brewing?

Either next sunday, or the sunday after.

I'm leaving town on Monday (9/16) for a week. It will probably be difficult to get them to you before I leave, but if you need any after I get back you're welcome to come grab some.
Even if you buy a small bag of hulls for this brew I can hook you up with some hulls for future batches.

I appreciate it. I'll probably just buy some for this batch, but will hit you up if i may need some in a pinch.

ETA: and i want one of you on here, to try some of my brews.

We sample beers and even do mock "judging" at our monthly meetings...

Do most of y'all use whirlfloc? If so, whole or half tab for a 5.5ish gallon batch?

Just opened a batch of my black ale. It turned out pretty good.

I use it... I think the instructions say half tab for a 5G batch, but I always throw a whole tab in there.

Nice label! I like the batch and bottle number on there. I have bottles of homebrew floating around that I have NO clue what or how old they are.

Yeah, but it's hard for me to get the meetings.

What do you use to make labels? The internet programs are pretty shitty.

Just got home and found my CO2 tank has run dry. Out of date by two months so now I have to get it tested before I can refill. Stupid safety.

I saw this method on a lot of fancier liquors and I thought it would add a nice touch. The idea is for alot of my homebrew to be used as gifts and this makes them seem more special.

I started with some clipart and then made it my own in paint. Then I put the label as a picture into word and printed onto green labels.

The bag I have says 1 tab for 5 gallons but I've seen people say you only need 1/2.
I haven't been using it but was reading how excessive proteins in suspension can result in "stale" flavors over the long haul. I'm about to pull more than half of my barrel to bottle and then will top it off. I won't open it again for 6 months or so and wanted to avoid any off flavors, so I'll whirlfloc that batch.
