Dammit! I checked the signup sheet and didn't see any black IPAs.

This will be an imperial, so there's that.

So for this beer tomorrow I need some suggestions/advice.

I am brewing a basic belgian ale to start souring. Really simple recipe with pilsner, acid and flaked wheat; one hop addition, nothing exciting.

I have a yeast cake of Wyeast Forbidden Fruit (Belgian Ale) and then a liter starter of the dregs of a Jester King bottle. Should I pitch the starter when i pitch the normal yeast, just pitch the starter, or wait until the beer ferments with the traditional yeast some then pitch the starter?

With that large a population of Forbidden Fruit; I would pitch at the same time.

If you mash high, that sacro is going to take off and eat what it can. I would imagine the bacteria and yeast in the JK dregs will be more than happy to finish off what it can't.

Frat, What's the latest on HB1036?

I saw a post from Jeremy in Shreveport that was pretty concerning, but couldn't find that same text anywhere on the legislative website.

Frat's out of town right now. Not sure if he's gonna be checking in over the next few days.

Brewed the double black IPA yesterday. The pale ale seems to have fermented out, but I won't dry hop for a few more days.

Also kegged my version of the green tea wheat we did for Iron Brewer last night. I had upped the passionfruit tea amount a bit, and now I've got pink beer. Seriously. Will have to take a pic of it. Looks like grapefruit juice. Tastes pretty good though.

Looks like it had some amendments by the Senate that the house voted against, if I'm reading these websites correctly. Doesn't bode well for getting it through this session as they have bigger fish to fry this week that they've put off.

I was out of town last week. One of my kegs must have had a leak. I came back home last night to find three flat beers in the kegerator and no gas in the tank. Though it's probably good I don't drink this week after the bachelor party weekend I just had.

I've been following that online, but then saw this on facebook. It was the first mention I'd seen of HB1036 making changes to homebrew legislation.

The changes to sections (5)(a) and (i) are a little troubling and could potentially cause issue with homebrewers participating in future charity events and would definitely make homebrew competitions giving away non-medal prizes like we did at the Louisiana Homebrew Club Competition illegal.

quote:

Commissioner Hebert would like you to be aware of the proposed conference committee report amendments to HB 1036 (copied below) that may be of interest to you and your association. The proposed amendments define homebrew in accordance with the applicable federal regulations and clarify where /how homebrew can be served.

(5)(a) Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, the commissioner shall issue a three-day special event homebrew permit to any retail dealer qualified for on premise consumption who applies for such permit at no fee authorizing the retail dealer to allow a person to bring homebrew alcoholic beverages on his licensed premises for the purpose of possessing, consuming, and serving such homebrew on his licensed premises in connection with homebrew club meetings, organized affairs, exhibitions, or competitions such as homebrewer's contests, tastings, or judging where no general admission or other type fee or charge is assessed in connection with the homebrew permit and in accordance with all of the following criteria:

(i) Homebrew shall not be sold or offered for sale. and the person who makes the homebrew or any association of persons who make the homebrew shall not receive any compensation or any other thing of value, whether directly or indirectly, other than trophies, plaques, certificates, ribbons, medals or similar awards of nominal value, from any club meetings, organized affairs, exhibitions, competitions or other events where the homebrew is sampled in accordance with the sampling provisions promulgated under the authority of R.S. 26:75(C) and 275(B).

(ii) Homebrew shall be served only to those individuals attending the special homebrew event and shall not be served to the patrons of the retail establishment or general public.

(iii) All homebrew alcoholic beverages shall be removed from the licensed premises within a reasonable time upon conclusion of the special homebrew event.

(iv) The retail dealer shall not be required to obtain a special events permit from the Department of Health and Hospitals and shall be exempt from any additional compliance with the state's Sanitary Code but only with regard to the duration and location of the special homebrew event.

(b) For purposes of this Paragraph, "homebrew" shall mean the brewing of beer, mead, and other alcoholic beverages through fermentation in a residence or other authorized facility by a person of the lawful age to purchase alcoholic beverages on a small scale, not to exceed 100 gallons per calendar year for a household with one resident of the lawful age to purchase alcoholic beverages or 200 gallons for a household with two or more residents of the lawful age to purchase alcoholic beverages as a hobby for personal consumption either (1) by that person or his or her family, neighbors, guests, and friends, (2) or for use at free distribution at residential social gatherings, and amateur brewing competitions homebrew club meetings, organized affairs, exhibitions or competitions on the premises of a licensed Class A retail dealer holding a homebrew permit in accordance with this Paragraph, or (3) for any of the other noncommercial reasons as provided for in Paragraph (1) of this Subsection regarding special event licenses where homebrew is served as an incidental part of the event and in accordance with the sampling provisions promulgated under the authority of R.S. 26: 75(C) and 275(B). “Homebrew” shall not include any licensed alcoholic beverages manufactured, distributed or otherwise served for commercial purposes.'

Same here. Lots of Citra and Amarillo in this one.

Yesterday was a tough and long brewing/cooking/cleaning day though.

Was following Wookey Jack's mash schedule of 60 mins at 145* and a raise up to 155* for 10 minutes but whichever way I put it into beersmith didn't leave much room for much a sparge. I guess I need to fine tune that process if we brew it again any time soon.

Both beers are fermenting away though.

The changes to the homebrew legislation passed out of committee yesterday and will be voted on.

LINK

Unfortunately adding this amendment at the 11th hour of the session will prevent most in the Louisiana homebrewing community from having adequate time to properly review the legislation and assess the impact these changes will have on our participation in future events like Zapp's, WYES, Iron Brewer, and the Louisiana Homebrew Competition.

Im almost certain it will pass no matter what we do, but I've contact my state representatives and voiced my displeasure at the ATC adding this amendment to homebrew legislation on a commercial beer bill at the last minute. Essentially preventing us the time to voice our opinion.

I have been super busy lately and have left a pale dry hopping for almost 2 weeks. I feel horrible for neglecting, but hey things happen. Will this beer be even worth bottling?

I really wanna hold off and keg it. I've got everything for my draught system except a fridge. And that's kind if important

Go ahead and keg it now and let it sit at room temp and naturally prime with sugar. 14 days is pushing it with dry-hops, imo.

So use the priming sugar like I normally would when bottling, just do it in the keg? Do I need to hook it up to co2 as well at this point?
